Planning to purchase a hand gun..
I'm considering a 9mm as it's easy to use and handle.
I'm looking for other caliber suggestions and brands or hand guns. I'm looking to have a little something around the house and to be able to carry with me when we travel.
I'm small arms trained in the military and a CCP will be no issue.
Thoughts, suggestions?

Tim,
The Sig Sauer P229DAK .40 cal is what we switched to about 6 years ago to replace the 9mm. It is a little pricey, but its a good gun. The trigger pull is quite a bit more than what the 9 had, so some people had trouble adjusting to that. They would jerk the trigger and cause the rounds to go low. One thing you may not like is the fact that there is no safety on this weapon. The CG didn't want a gun with a safety because we never carried them with the safety on anyway when we holstered. It is smaller than the old Beretta fits in your hand really well.
Now, the old 92FS Beretta 9mm that we used to have is still a great gun, and has a safety. I bought one years ago to keep around the house for protection, and to practice more often since the CG only sends us to the range every six months. I don't think you could go wrong with this one. It is easy to shoot, has the safety, and costs less than the Sig.

I love my Rugers but the only 9mm I have other than a derringer is a CZ-75 PO7 duty in 9MM. I love it. Feels great in my hand, comfortable to hold. There are so many different opinions out there The only true suggestion is to go to a local range that has rental weapons and fire several of them before making your decision. Total out the door for mine was around $475.00

If you are into revolvers look at the Ruger blackhawk .357 convertable. Had one of those and it's cool. Comes with two cylinders one is for .357mag, the other is for 9mm the gun shoots both great and it's like buying two guns for the price of one. Just something if your into revolvers and my favorite line about mine was, it will never jam.

I've give some consideration to ammo when deciding on a caliber. Cost and availability are 2 factors. 9mm is cheap and plentiful compared to some other options. You want to be able to afford to shoot the thing once you get it - price out .45 ACP? A .45 might be better than sex but you can get a lot more sex for your money than what a brick of 45 ammo will cost you. About 3 or 4 years ago it seems .380 ammo was sparse. 9mm was hard to get too but it was the most easily obtainable. Something to consider as you look at the different options. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I have a Taurus 24/7 in .45 ACP and I absolutely love it. I'm 5'4 145 pounds and this thing is beautiful. Easy to carry, lightweight, accurate and fits perfectly in my hand. It's a double action with safety so cocked and locked is very safe. It's easy to draw since it's hammerless and the sights are designed for quick draw. Taurus makes it in 9mm, .40, and .45. I would suggest this from experience and it's also less than $400. just my .02
