Choke wiring

My 1983 2.8L ranger has lost power to the choke after the wire was dropped on a ground and sparked. I was wondering if anyone knows where the wire comes from or what could have been shorted out by this accident. The choke bimetal is good, but it takes way too long to open completely. Please advise.

Hey, sorry it took so long to get to ya'. I have an '85. I would assume that the choke circuitry wouldn't have changed much, if at all, from '83 to '85. On the inside PASSENGER SIDE fender wall, there is an electronic control, that controls current to the choke heater. It is solid state (transistorized). So, if you accidentally shorted it out, it probably burned out, or was significantly damaged. It is a plug-in unit, thus I assume it can be purchased from a Ford dealer at least, if not an auto parts store. The solid state device is initially powered by the computer. After the engine & compartment warm up sufficiently, power THEN comes from a constant hot wire (hot all the time, engine on or off), to continue sending current to the choke heater to prevent it from closing too early & quickly, causing flooding & fouling out. If you replace this unit, but still have trouble, then the computer, or another device (fuse, fusible link, etc) may have been compromised. I would bet money that it is simply the solid state unit though. Stay in touch. Let us know how you do.
