Cranking slow...everything new!?

Well guys i'm stumped now.

On my 6.9 van.

New starter, 2 new 800CCA batteries, and new fender solenoid, and good cables.

Brand new starter from today! (taught the one I put on 3 months ago was going bad) new one helped, but still crankin slower than I'd like.

Saturday morning, first start of the day, was the last time it cranked normal. After that, it's been turning over really slow, even worst when the engine is hot, to the point it won't hardly start!

I have been noticing for the past few weeks, it has been cranking slightly slower than before when it was new, still fast enough to fire up the engine no problem though.

I load tested my batteries, and checked if my Alternator is charging, and it is charging 100%.

Any taughts???

On a side note, my fender solenoid is only held on the Rad support by 1 screw, as the other one has no tread, but it's been like that since I put the new solenoid in, and it didn't seem to bother it's performance for the first 2 months....

^^^ And check voltage drop from the batteries to the starter and from starter to ground. Just cause the cables look good doesn't mean there's not some hidden resistance.

I'll go thru all the grounds and what not, i've done some research and it appears the block to frame ground could be my problem.

Hopefully that's it, new cables wouldn't hurt that's for sure, but it be silly to put some new ones this year, it's going for winter storage in a few weeks.

When you check for a charge on your batteries,
put the meter probes on the "battery post's center's" (NOT the cable ends themselves)
this will give you a true reading of what the battery is getting.
Had a similar situation with my tractor, the ground to the frame was corroded,
Sand papered it and problem was solved.

well john, pick up your old set of jumper cables, and run them from battery ground post to a good ground on the engine. if that improves anything, you know you have a ground issue. if that makes no change, you appear to have an issue on the hot side.

Well don't I feel silly now.

I started with the easiest thing, I cleaned up real good my battery posts, tighten them up real good, and bam, problem solved.

"Although" it doesn't crank as fast as my motorhome does, very close, but no quite.

While cleaning my posts, I pulled back that rubber boot that protects the positive post on the drivers side, and the red rubber sleeve on the cable pulled off with it about half an inch, exposing bare wire in the cable.

So looks like new cables are on the list for next spring.

Right now, it's cranking fast enough that it's a "turn key start" so it'll stay like that for the next few weeks till it goes for winter storage.

Good to hear it was something simple, John. As for the Motorhome cracking faster, it's not a newer starter is it?

That won't affect how _fast_ it cranks. Only _whether_ it cranks. Bad relay ground will make the relay buzz, or do nothing. But it would be a good measure to improve the ground, given the description in the opening post.
