I dropped my car(2003 explorer XLS) for a brake pad work at an auto shop. but when I went to pick it up, the engine made big knocking noise when starting. the mechanic told me seems the engine having problem. he was shock too because he admitted the car was fine when I dropped it. he didn't do anything except the brake work and top of some oil(I told him to check the coolant and oil level). I towed it to dealer and was told the engine is bad, I need a new engine. he didn't give exact diagnosis, said that will cost more than $900. he also said the mechanic seems didn't do anything wrong.
the car doesn't show any other symptom except the noise, does anyone know what might be the problem? I want to try whatever I can before rebuild the engine.
Thank you very much for any help. since it is not drivable now, it is hard for me to get it checked elsewhere.
Did you have to pay the dealer a diagnostic fee? I would expect a better explanation from the dealer other than the "engine is bad". There could be lots of reasons for the knock (none of them good). Is your engine a V6 or V8? I would ask for a written diagnosis. A new engine for $900 seems a little low. Is the mechanic talking repair your existing engine, a new engine, or rebuilt engine.
diagnosis fee is around 45~90(I didn't go there yet, don't know exact charge). he told me the engine is bad, if I want to know more, have to spend more than $900 for diagnosis(he didn't tell me that at the beginning, though I made it clear I want to know what is wrong). he quote a new engine of $5000.

I suspect the $900 estimate is just to have them tear the engine down to see what the problem is. You dont indicate which motor you have, but your problem could be timing chain(s) related. Fairly common problem and expensive.
