Engine clatters at startup

97 Ford Explorer 4.2L V6, 75,000 miles, engine clatters at startup but goes away in 5 minutes or less. Is this something I should be worrying about?

What happens if I do nothing? Can this damage my engine?

If you can afford to have the problem fixed you should. I have seen these engines jump cam timing because of this.If these 4.o sohc motors jump timing there is not much you can do about it. Ihave had to put complete engines in after they jump time . Ford engine hot line says do not try to fix the engine or timing, swap a FQR engine in it. These engines are expensive compared to a regular pushrod 4.0.

My explorer had the same problem. after 53,000 miles the camshaft chain tensioner broke, along with the jackshaft tensioner. the dealer wanted $1500 to repair the engine, and i decided to repair it myself. unfortunately this engine is very complicated compared to the V8's i am used to. i have the engine apart but i am unsure of the proper parts i need. are there redesigned parts i need to get a hold of? also i am not sure of the proper procedure on the reinstallation. any advice for me?

try to get you hands on a dealer service manual or at least the section on the rebuild all, the gears and chains have to be lined up you will need several dealer special tools to hold the cams and crank before putting on the chains and tensioners. The manual has pretty good illustrations allot better than any other aftermarket manual. Just be very patient and double check everything twice. If you are amaginative and mechanically smart you should be able to come up with some way of holding the cams and the crank. GOOD LUCK

I also have a 97 Explorer with the 4.0 V6. I have the same noise. It goes away in 2 or 3 minutes. What makes it go away? Are they oil pressure controlled or do they have to get lubricated before the noise stops?

they are pumped up by oil pressure the old style tnsioners take a while to fully pump up. The dealer will have the most recent update.

I tried and failed to replace the camshaft
chain tensioner and guide. The dealer said
they recommend replacing the engine, is that
really necessary? They are charging $6200,
does that sound reasonable? Thanks for all
your help.

LAST EDITED ON 14-Aug-00 AT 08:22 PM (EST)[p]That sounds about right. The 4.0 SOHC motor is a very expensive motor just like the new 5.4, 4.6 engines . Motors these days are almost impossible to work on without dealer special tools, manuals they make all these new engines with such small tolerances and hard to time, that they are basically throw away engines . Break em and replace them no more rebuilding. I work at a dealer and when we have a SOHC motor blown up or that has jumped timing we replace them . Why take the risk of replacing the broken parts you can see and have another piece come apart 1 month later also you get a decent warranty with a reman. engine. It's just not worth it to rebuild these modern OHC motors. It cost a more but in the long run you will save. Good Luck

LAST EDITED ON 15-Jan-01 AT 10:26 PM (EST)[p]My engine died as well, started to sound like a diesel, took it to ford, made appointment to have cam tensioner replaced. Engine died the night before it was to go in for service. They said it was ok to drive too!

There is a recall now on this 00M12, but damage may have already have begun.

I thought this was worthy enough to be bumped up!
