Application is a 64 f250 4x4 (no tags on the diffs) for gear ratio identification.
This unit has a bent axle housing up front and I want to transplant an entire front axle unit from a donor vehicle of similar year. What is the easiest way to identify ratio without tags? I marked the drive shaft and rotated the tire to just over 4 and 1/2 turns so I am thinking 456 ratio. Just want to be sure before I swap. (actually I rotated the rear axle of the recipient truck)
Any Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Paul in Phx
Welcome Fireman,,, and I am guessing,, but yes I myself would consider 4 and 1/2 turns a 4.56,,, my 63 F250 4x4 has 4.56 and yes I did same and same results,,, good luck,, hope bent axle is all it is!

Original Spicer/Dana rear axle ID tag located under one of the bolts that retain the inspection cover to the housing. Many are missing today.
Look on the Warranty Plate for the AXLE code, post what it is. Warranty Plate located on the left door face below the latch.
If the code has 3 digits, the first 2 refer to the Spicer/Dana 60 rear axle your truck came with. The 3rd digit refers to the front driving axle.
But FoMoCo didn't always have a 3 digit AXLE code. Whatever the rear ratio is, the front ratio will be similar. If rear is 4.56, front is 4.55. If rear is 4.10, front is 4.09.
If you have a limited-slip, turning the wheel to find ?x?, it might be lieing to you... I could never get the exact ?x? with any of mine. I thought I had it correct and when I pulled it out, was off. Turns out it already had the ?x? that I wanted. Anyone else find this?
