how to put a welder in a truck

I have seen this alot, where guys on the trail have welders built into the truck to fix broken axels and drive shafts, how does one accomplish such a task without paying big bucks, all i need is a cheap affective way of doing this and still be happy with the end result.

AFAIK The systems that many guys use are specialized alternators. I have moved this topic to aftermarket products but you may be able to get some ideas in the electrical forum also.

This is more of a truck tech question than a garage and shop question.
