so im considering building a new larger center console that goes all the way to the dash. I wonder if I could fiberglass off of the stock radio bezel and make it plus my new console look something like an h1 dash. I LOVE the interiors on the H1s! It's like a cockpit.
How funny.....I bought my Ex precisely BECAUSE it had no cockpit. Being 6'6" I greatly value all the 'personal space' it has!
HOWEVER, I want to encourage you to do it if that's what you want. In fact, others will probably follow suit. Especially if there's..cough cough, pictures, cough cough.....
I'll second that a Hummer interior is very very snug. It's not terribly uncomfortable but there's little to no room for moving around. even just reaching over to get something from a back seat or anything like that is not possible while driving. I removed the entire interior out of my Hummer to try to simplify and also regain as much interior room as possible. It's still basically sitting in a tunnel on each side but the feeling is much more open.
Here's a pic of what a hummer looks like with no interior and truckbed lined.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you do this. I could change the way I currently have my laptop...
Pics of your laptop setup?

Good luck, bro!

Will deff. post pics if I do this. I plan on doing a console regardless, not sure on the rest if I want to tear into the dash or not.

Just looked those up, pretty badass. Would they fit?

After I saw you post pics of your hummer the other day is what prompted me about this idea (i had seen the interiors before but seeing your hummer made me re think this idea)
I agree it looks very snug. I don't want to make it TOO cramped where its uncomfortable, but it would be cool to be able to sit back and control all thr electronics without having to reach for stuff. Never saw an h1 with no interior, didn't know the seats dipped down so much into that "tunnel" haha.
I was actually going to pm you, are you able to take a few measurements for me? im curious on the width from armrest to armrest in your hummer vs our excursions. I know the hummer is wider, just curious how much. I did look up specs and apparently the h1 is only ~7" wider overall than the excursion, looks to be more than that though.
I'd LOVE an h1 one day. They seem like they're too expensive though.
Thing about the width of the Hummer. It might only be 7" wider but the doors are thinner then ours and the seats are pushed closer to the doors. At least that's how it felt in mine when I was in the Army.
Yeah the seats are pushed out as far as physically possible. the doors are very thin and straight up-n-down and you definetely do sit IN the tunnel. with not alot of room for your legs. This is especially bad when you have the tub covered in sound insulation and interior trim. I removed all that for various reasons but one of them was space and "open-ness" (that's not a word is it?).
I was actually thinking of going the opposite direction with the excursion and completely removing the center console. We have a honda element and it's very convinient since my wife can unbuckle and crouch back to the rear seats to mess with the kids (1 and 2 years old) without having to pull off the road.
Eitherway, i'm very interested to see a custom dash on an excursion. Can't wait to see pics posted.
I've always thought the H1's were cool. I actually found one a while back and almost bought it but the timing wasn't right. Maybe someday. And openness is a word.
H1 interior is much smaller than you might think. That center console really eats up a lot of the interior room and you feel squished between the door and the console.
Here are the dimensions
Excursion
Front Hip Room (in)67.5
Front Leg Room (in)42.3
Front Shoulder Room (in)68.3
Hummer H1
23.1 inches of hip room
38.1 inches of legroom
77.1 inches of shoulder room
Its the hip room that gets ya.
I think it would look really cool, especially if you were able to use the X's larger interior dimensions to your advantage.
To answer your question I have a Jotto desk which attaches to the front passenger seat bolts. The desk rotates around so the passenger can sit with it out of the way. I don't have pictures but I can take some and post them later.
