So i have a PEBEAB (Problem exists between engine and bumper, aka user error) issue.
I know its dumb, but I can't figure you how to release my serp belt so I can pull my alternator and get on that gives me voltage. I know that just pulling my alt will end badly, since I can see that I have enough cracking I should replace the serp belt too. (At least I think 40-50 cracks per inch of belt is bad...)
Can someone post a pic of which part/bolt/nut I'm supposed to loosen to get the alternator off? and maybe which size wrench should work too?
I have a copy of the 96-99 FSM... but without search and understanding what to look for beyond body parts its mostly useless for me.
1/2 inch drive breaker bar or ratchet, in the "square" near the tensioner. Turn it counter clockwise, and then you can lift the holding tab in place, to hold the tensioner in place.

Here's a video by Ken(woodnthings)
OMG I feel soooo stupid for not seeing that.
That is 100x better than a v-belt for tensioning.
Edit: in rep jail or I'd give you reps for posting all this for me. I'll have to send Ken reps too. thanks!
Observation: I have no tension holder arm thingie underneath. if it was light out I'd get a pic for y'all. Apparently having an E99 got me a around the belt hose (without tiedown clamp) and no tension release support.
So which year did the lower arm to hold tension get added? I'm thinking if I ever have to do "major" work to the engine its a mod I'll do.
Hmm, Ford's been using a similar style tensioner for a while. Maybe the little holder broke off at some point or your tensioner was replaced with one that didn't have it i.e. aftermarket maybe. Especially since it appears someone has been in there before for the "around the belt" hose.
I have to wait until morning to see if mine has it. Thanks for making the video. I'd rep you too, if I could. You and Big Al have helped me with enough stuff lately that I'm still in rep jail for you both.
Some have the clip to hold it, others don't, neither of mine had them. I replaced a water pump on my sisters Excursion for them, turns out my brother in laws brother snapped the square drive part off the tensioner part for them, just after replacing an alternator for them. It was a royal pain in the butt to release the belt without it, it was even harder to get the belt back on. If you are taking the time to replace the belt, I would get the dual alternator upper radiator hose if you don't have it. It makes it much nicer as you don't have to take off the upper hose just to replace the belt.
This is the first Serp belt vehicle that I've own/had to service.
Everything else has been v-belts, which suck to tension.
Once I pulled my shiny never used "you don't need that tool"(wife) breaker bar out, it was free instantly and removed in about 20 seconds. Not fighting to get it around the fan helps out alot too.
I'll pick up new parts today and install it all back in.

If you don't have the hose, the belt/hose maker Gates has a kit for it now... although since the hose is currently about $16 and to get the kit is +$30 I don't know if its the way to go.
The kit has 2 hoses, clamps, and a new serp belt. For simplicity thats the way I would go, since I never manage to find the right strength for hose clamps.
For my pocketbook, I'd say buy the belt and hose separate and get 3 good hose clamps, since you want the 3rd to tie it to the bracket under the alternator.
Edit:
Also, if you can spell serpentine right in the searchbox the original directions show up. Apparently I failed the last time I tried.
I meant the little hold-up clip, I already have the hose. Why on Earth Ford would decide to route a hose THROUGH a belt, I don't know, but I'm guessing there were accountants involved.
However, this is an excuse for me to finally get that nice big 1/2" breaker bar. Maybe I'll keep it under the front seat.

I guess that does make more sense.
I'm pretty sure through was related to a ~$.50/truck savings in rubber, which totally an accountant thing. Although if they are skimping on rubber, I'd prefer it be on hoses and not tires.
that was one of the first mods I did when I owed my truck. I think its an ambulance hose or something.
but sure is nice when you have to replace the belt.
2 weeks after I did replace the hose to around the belt my tensioner/pully siezed. so needless to say once I had the part I was up and running in no time and no coolant to refill.
now I own a van and can't see my dam hose like you truck guys. lol
