Have a '70 F100 project that will get a 5.8L/351W engine out of a '95 F150 and a 4R70W transmission out of a '00 F150. The engine with aftermarket heads, intake, carb, mild cam and headers should make about 425 FWHP. Use will be daily driver with an occasional trip to the strip just to time it. Rear end gears will be 3.73.
I'd like to find a reasonably priced torque converter with about 2400 stall. Seems like I read that some of the stock converters for that transmission were in that stall range.
give hughes a call. have had some really good luck over the yrs with these guys. what exactly is you rpm range and what cam specs will really help out on the converter selection. with a 3.73 gear will put a lot of pressure on you stator in converter. what weight? need to know all these question for any decent transmission/converter shop. if they don't ask these questions your dealing with wrong shop. good luck and keep us informed. have had some bad luck with a converter shop and they are suppose to be a good company. hughes hasn't blown up and very pleased in my application.
I'll give Hughes a call but I'm hoping to avoid the cost of a custom converter. Don't have the cam specs yet but I'm not looking for a radical cam. Streetability is the priority. Weight should be about 3600-3800 lbs I think.
I sent a question to Hughes Performance asking what nuts/studs are used to bolt their torque converter up to the flex plate. Here's their response. Makes me feel good about their customer service.

Been very pleased with them over the yrs. had a bad run in with TCI and was very expensive$$$$$. i used a xtm43 converter for a 460 and had a few upgrades for my paticular situation. Really like the stator thats in a xtm series converter. i have big tire and hrspwr situations and getting it all to work together reliably was the trick. they ask the right questions and excellent tech over the yrs.
