Ok i had an 04 F150 and i now have an 09 F150 and the 09 is starting to show symptoms of the problem that killed the old one, the cam phasers in these triton engine is going in them and in the 04 i left it long enough without doing anything it caused serious damage writing off the engine.
the 09 has the same symptoms and i have taken it in for warranty work but what i want to know is, is there something i am doing wrong that this keeps happening? or is there something i can do to prevent it? because if it's going to be a 1500 dollar fix every year or two years because they are wearing out then that doesn't seem worth it.
if anyone can give me some insite as well as a slight run down on how it works that would be rad.
Iit's got about 96,000 km on itAt idle it has a loud knocking noise and every now and then the knocking will get very loud and the whole truck will start to shake (only at idle). The shaking and the knock will both go away once you get up to higher RPM or road speed. At idle the knock is always there but the shaking isn't as often but getting more frequent.
That doesn't sound like a phaser issue, but I suppose it could be. If a phaser were going bad, it would likely run worse as the RPMs increase. The phasers on the '09 and '10 5.4s are not known to be problematic. Sounds almost like a fuel starvation issue or maybe an intermittent misfire not triggering the CEL (idiot light). Might need to get someone with a good code scanner to see if any latent codes are showing.
Could be a COP (Coil on Plug) going bad? The shaking could be a misfire? Not sure about the knock though?
My 2001 had 2 COPs drop out at the same time, truck shook like crazy at idle and low RPM, but if you locked out the OD on the highway and kept the revs up it would smooth out.
Took it in and they replaced the cam phasers that vleared it up and asked about a miss fire issue but they didn't think so I'm still gonna get a code reader to see what comes up
My dad has an '09 F150 4.6L 3V that is doing something very similar. Has an audible knock at hot idle (classic cam phaser), and every once in awhile when pulling in to a parking spot, or up to a stop light, the truck will start knocking and shaking like crazy. The idle speed drops very low when this happens, and it won't stop till you get back on the gas...then it smooths out. I encouraged him to buy this truck because I hadn't heard heard of any problems with the '09 4.6 cam phasers, but it sounds like they still have issues. Did the new cam phasers really fix your problem, or has it come back?
why does yous insist on putting the same Ford junk phasers back in when you spend 1500 bucks to fix it??? There are companies out there that make delete kits that fix the problem the first time and it will never happen again, and for less then the factory parts?? strange i would never spend money only to put the same junk back in my motor
The use of a slightly higher viscosity synthetic oil also helps. Here in South Florida, 10W-40 full synthetic oil cures a lot of these cam phaser problems.
It seems that the use of conventional oils causes deposits, which result in wear and poor cam phaser performance.
You could try 10W-30 full synthetic oil if you continue to have a problem.
