2005 F350 6.0 3 sets of batteries. replaced the originals with NAPA premium gold. since the originals were starting to struggle sometimes. the original NAPA's discharged so badly they froze solid. second set has gone stone dead too many times to count. disconnected from the vehicle and fully charged both pass a load test with flying colors, but leave it parked 3-5 days and its stone dead again. tried testing for parasitic draw, thought i found something on the fuse that keeps memory to the instrument panel, but then it started going dead even with the fuse out. anyone ever find a specific component that gave grief. or have any other ideas. the batteries are taking a beating and will need to be replaced but there is no point until I figure this out.
Disconnect both batteries. Hook up 1 of them through an ammeter and watch for current. The problem is that when I do this my draw is tiny. Battery was tested on the bench by a reputable alternator shop. 140 amp and 14+ volts seems pretty fair to me? My problem seems like it's not continuous. Makes it nearly impossible to find
If your amp draw is much over .07 amps, then you have a problem. Also, your alternator can charge ok, and still have a drain problem when the engine is turned off.
You also have a newer truck with all the automated systems that keep certain things online for a time period after the key is removed. So when you do any testing you need to wait awhile before the system will time out and take everything off the battery.
Yeah the problem is I have never seen any real amp draw. It seems like it comes and goes, that is what is making this so dang difficult to fix. Could the alternator be doing that intermittently
Usually no. The most common problem is a bad diode(it has 6 inside) that will cause a drain on the battery.
Does this thing have anything added(amplifiers, inverters, snowplow, etc.)? Have you gone ahead and disconnected any underhood trouble lights to eliminate that as a intermittent problem?
Only addition is a 12 k warn, the issue predates the winch. Underhood light has no bulb but hadn't thought of that. Alternator shop said based on his testing that diodes were all good
