I'll be dropping the transmission here soon so that i can change the input shaft bearing and throwout bearing, because i've been giving conflicting information as to what my problem is, i let off the clutch and get the rolling/grinding sound sitting still, also when accellerating in gear i geat the loud whining, no slippage though! throwout or input shaft bearing? They aren't that expensive so idk why i couldn't replace both.
ALSO! I need to replace the oil pan seal from what i can tell, i also need to change the gasket on the metal piece below it closer to the tranny under the cab that's shaped like a crescent moon with a slit in it that reveals some gear, no clue what that piece is yet. Could i replace the oil pan gasket by removing the tranny? I've heard you have to lift the engine for it to clear the tranny but if i remove that then i think i should be able to get it out? advice? Also anything else i should plan on replacing while it's out? Probably a new clutch kit.
If when you depress the clutch with engine running, and the noise in the tranny stops the input bearing is probably the culprit. I had 2 go bad on a 86 gasser I have. It has the T19 tranny which I assume you still have. The cressent moon thing you are talking about is the inspection plate for the clutch, and there is no gasket there. The only way to repair the oil pan gasket correctly is to pull the engine. Some have cut the cross member under the engine, but that is a bad idea IMO.
Ahhhh. pull the engine, gotcha, well, i also need to repair a lot of other gaskets, so once i get in school in the spring i'll probably just pull the engine completely and replace most gaskets as well as stud the heads, inspect pistons etc.
That is the case, i press the clutch in and the noise stops, but is that also the culprit for the whining when accelerating in gear?
P.s i checked the level of fluid in my transfer case and it's good but the fluid is almost coffee color and very thin, what should i replace it with? I've heard auto transmission fluid or a ford product, i assumed something thicker as in regular 85w90 gear oil would be what to put in there????
No.. gear oil in anything with an aluminum case is usually bad. Needs something thin that will dissapate the heat. I beleive they call for merc./dex. III. You might be able to drop the pan an inch or so in the rig, you just need to clean the surface and silicone, from the factory they did not come with a gasket. I would check your main seals while youre dug into it to, theyre known to leak after a while.
Also, i ordered an oil pan gasket and put it on, still leaks.
dex III where do i find that???? I'll probably end up just pulling the engine when i get down to doin all that, be a good experience and i'll be able to get to everything easily. stupid question but is there a FRONT main seal? if so where does it run????
Front main seal would be on the front of the crankshaft, I believe under the harmonic balancer.
Just use whatever ATF you can find. Mercon or Dextron are specs that are more important for automatic transmissions. A gallon jug will be a bit more than is needed.
okay. sounds good. i'm slowly diagnosing alll of my leaks :/ i have a leak from around the base of the biller tube, and it seems like a leak from the perimeter of whatever housing is right behind all the pulleys and belts, seems to have oil all along where it meets the engine i guess. hard to describe, ill post a thread with all the leaking areas soon to see if anyone can help and tell me which specific gasket it would be, i also have one area that i CANNOT figure out what is leaking.
