Hey there names Paul brand new to the forum with some questions about my rebuild. I'm working on rebuilding the 390 in my truck and really want some more spunk out of the engine. As I'm not very mechanically inclined I'm not totally sure where to start. It has a Holley four barrel and a cam but it was built with towing in mind when my father had it many years ago. Now should I put in a different intake manifold and maybe bore n stroke it or use a different cam or what? It's a manual whose towing days are over and I just want some more oomph on the freeway and I have about four grand to work with thank you for any help.
And get Barry Rabotnick's book on building FE engines (a 390 is an FE). He is the owner of Survival and they can point you in the right direction. Welcome to the site and there is also an FE specific forum you may want to check out.
While getting "More Power" is great you've got to make sure you can stop once you get started. I'd recommend saving out a portion (however small) of your funds to upgrade your braking system as well. It'll save money in the long run. Lots of new power + stock/worn brakes = potential big problems.
Thanks for the feed back I think I will get that stroker kit. Any other tips out there? Is there anyone that has used a kit like this? How much of a hp increase did you end up getting?
