i just bought a truck with a 390 thats been sittin for a few yrs. I want to know what the best way to build this motor without breaking the bank. the engine will be going in my 76 f100. with a c6 behind it. im not looking for serious power, just want something that can pull a car trailer, camper, etc. thanks in advance
I would go with with a basic rebuild with 9-1 compression. The long stroke keeps the torque going, and I would save my money for a good street cam. Do not get a generic RV cam.
abreiholz, Be prepared for your engine to be a 360 instead of a 390. Seems all FEs become 390s on sale day. There were a few 390s installed in trucks from the factory but a darn few. That's not to say a 390 has not been swapped in in the last 40 years either.
You don't have to spend much money on a 390 build to make a puller. They came out of the box that way.
im sure its a 390. the previous owner was my grandpa and he put the 390 in there 20 yrs ago. Im kinda just looking to freshen the motor, and while it apart i figured a cam could help out etc.
and if its in a full need of a rebuild then I would spend the on a Ford OEM police Interceptor Intake....As they are better then the crappy Edelbrock performer RPM
