While browsing through this forum, I swear there was a "tool" to help decode the codes on the door plate. Either that or that "tool" are the members of this forum. Can someone help me decode the following:
F26YRL04690
131 1 F260 44 A 24
06800 170 4100 74
The top number of course is the vin, but does it mean anything else? Your help is much appreciated!
Thanks for the info.! Now I'm a bit disappointed because I was told by the previous owner that the truck has a 390 motor. Don't get me wrong, I do want the 390 motor. I'm really wondering if I do have a 390 motor. The previous owner had the motor rebuilt. At least it's painted like new. But it's painted Bowtie orange! He chose that color to match the truck. It feels way stronger than my 352 and it definitely has more power than a Bowtie 350. But that could be due to the 4:10 rear gears. I found the ID tag on the rear diff. The front diff says 4:09. My machinist friend says the only real way to id the CID of these FE motors is to check out the rods. But if it's really a 360 with all that power, I'm wondering how much more power I'm missing if I had a 390!
I was told my '69 had the 302 in it. Then we thought it might be the 390. Lo and behold, it happened to have the 360. (it is the original motor, same VIN code "Y" as you have - just from some folks that didn't really care to know what was under the hood).
I can't say much about how much power you might be missing, but I know with the 360 in my Tank, even with it being 34 years old and with a long laundry list of problems, it has enough power and then some for anything I've done with this beast to date!
rebelchic, you do have a point. It has plenty of power. But I'm one of those that need to know. I'm going to measure out the distance of the stroke using Mil1ion's method this weekend.
Hey ya all I was just reading this and went out to my truck and found this f10gnf52332
