Talking Goin' manual

Hello everybody

So far no response in Trans/Diff/Xfer Case forum and I
really need some help, 'cos I got the opportunity to find
what I need easily if I know it can be done, cheap.

My truck is a '77 F-250 4WD lowboy w/400ci/C6/NP205.
I want to change it to 460ci w/NP435 4spd/NP205.

Does a truck with an auto trans. have the bracket for the clutch pedal?

Is there a flywheel/bellhousing for the 460, and what NP435
mates to a lowboy NP205 xfer case? I can get parts from a number of trucks if I know what I'm looking for. Will a flywheel
and bellhousing from another engine work and if so what engine?

Please, any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like an easy swap, compared to some of the coniving I have done to build my Jeep CJ. I am using the very NP435 you refered to, it came out of an '83 F350 4x4 with a 205 transfercase, to use it in my Jeep I had to replace the output shaft with the shorter version & add an adapter from Novak Adapters. Now my CJ drive line is 304v8, NP435, Dana 20, Ford 9" rear diff, running an Auburn full spool, Chevy 10 bolt front diff w/ Ford/Dana 44 Rotors & hubs, running a Detroit TrueTrac & 4.11:1 Quality Gear R&P's.
I sold the 205 T/C from the Ford 1 ton for $200. I have no doubt that with a bit of searching the auto wreckers in your area, you could find a F350 4x4 with the exact set up you described as wanting to assemble. They had NP435/NP205 combos as both mated & divorced type systems. Mine was the mated style with the 205 bolted directly onto the back of the NP435.

Good luck on your project.

white_knight, the swap you're talking about isn't too rough.

For a bellhousing for the 460, you can use a 351M/400 unit. The ideal thing would be to find a donor truck that has a 351M/400 NP435/NP205 combo and pull the tranny from it. Whlie you're at it grab the transfer case adapter too.

I'm not sure about your pedals, I've never looked under the dash of an auto truck. If your donor truck has them, I'd say pull the whole pedal assembly. Be sure and grab the equalizer bar and associated brackets that bolt to the frame and bellhousing.

Before you can decide on what flywheel you need, you need to know what year of 460 you will be using. 78' and older 460s are internally balanced so they need a "neutral balance" flywheel. Ford never put a 4-spd behind a 460 in these years so finding a "stock" 460 flywheel will be next to impossible. For these older engines you can use a flywheel from a 360 or 390 which are readily available. You may or may not need to have the flywheel redrilled for your clutch depending on what you happen to get ahold of. pad77, a fellow FTEer used a 429CJ flywheel which is a direct bolt on but you may have a hard time finding one of these. One other option for a flywheel for these older engines is L&L Products. They sell a SFI approved neutral balance flywheel for this type of swap although it is spendy. $275 I think.

If you are going to use a 79' or newer (externally balanced) 460 you shouldn't have any trouble finding a flywheel.

Check out L&Ls website at www.landlproducts.com . They have everything you need to complete your 460 swap without any headaches. Jeff's Bronco Graveyard is a reseller of L&L's products and you can usually get stuff a little cheaper there.

Good luck!!!

I have to assume you mean the one under the truck, the answer is no. You have to grab all the linkage and pedal stuff AND the bracket that is attached to the frame.

You can grab the clutch adjustment linkage (eyehole thing with a cone) at NAPA for about $10.
