Going to look at a 86 f150 this afternoon. 300, t-18 4speed. Any thing in particular I should look out for? It has 211,000 miles, new bushings in the front end. The body seems not to bad.
Look at the carburetor & distributor. That thing originally came with a computer-controlled carb and ignition, people try and "upgrade it" by replacing only the carburetor (leaving many stray vacuum lines as a result) which freaks out the computer and causes drivability issues.
The carb should have some electrical wires going to it, the distributor shouldn't have a vacuum hose going to it and should have a TFI ignition module mounted on it.
Rust. Cab corners, wheel archs, passenger and drivers floor corners are places to check. It can be fixed, but if you should know what your getting into. If you have to pay someone to do that, it may not be economically feasible.
Does this 86 have the TFI ignition or has it been converted to the duraspark or other type? Are all of the stock components under the hood? Are emissions be required in your location? Has the emissions stuff been removed? Just a few things to check that I can think of, off the top of my head. Good luck.

Emissions are not an issue in our county. It has the duraspark2 ignition, He says the electric choke quit working so he hooked up a manual one. Was a carter carb stock?

Yes. If it has been converted to a Duraspark 2 setup, it should have a Carter YFA carburetor.
Thanks guys, I went to look at it yesterday afternoon, it runs and shifts well. It has more rust than showed in the pictures especially around the rear wheel wells, but the cab and front fenders are in pretty good shape for an ohio truck.
If we get it, it will be a driver for my youngest brother. But I think it will be a good education for him too.
Hey Mike,
Based on my experience yesterday I would also suggest carefully looking for cracks in the firewall, originating from the clutch master cylinder mounting point. Be sure to scrape of the cracked seam sealer around the reinforcement plate on the master cylinder and double check for any cracks there. You can get a better idea from the pictures I posted in this thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-cylinder.html
You can also have someone operate the clutch and look for firewall flexing around the area of the clutch master cylinder and along the edge of the reinforcement plate. The cracks are repairable, but you do need check for it. There are reinforcement panels out there to prevent and repair, but getting up under the dash is not my idea of a fun way to spend an afternoon. Good luck.
