2001 7.3 Intermittent SES
New to the forum and trying to construct my first post. Bought my first PSD about a month ago and I am having some serious issues that I can not figure out! I have an intermittent SES light with rough running that will sometimes last a few seconds or will continue for a while until I pull over and restart the truck. Now before I get flamed for the typical UVCH response, I already pulled both valve covers and found that the PS was correctly plugged in and I then added trimmed quarter to hold the clip in for good. The DS was a whole different story, The clip for the UVCH was actually broken off. So I replaced both the UVCH and the Valve cover gasket for good measure. I used a Delphi harness and Fel-Pro gasket and everything was fine and dandy for about 3 days or 75 miles. Problem solved!
Wellll no. I was cut off by a accord who then proceeded to brake very early for a red light. I had to slam on my brakes and I noticed under hard braking that my SES light would come on and the motor would Idle very rough for about 2 seconds until the truck would settle from the stop (have full tank of gas so don't think that it is a fuel pickup problem). About 10 minutes later the truck started to exhibit the original symptoms I had before replacing the UVCH. Luckily I have a friend who has a professional grade OBD2 scanner (OTC SPX Genisys) and pulled the code. Of course it gave me the P1316 code "IDM codes detected" which is was expecting. So performed a buzz test and got two codes. Don't remember the exact numbers but one was "Bank #1 short to ground/battery" and the other was "Numerous Faults on Bank 2". Perform the buzz test again and it passes with no problems. Perform again and passes. Perform again and the same codes come back.
So now I'm thinking that I have a faulty replacement UVCH on my DS and possibly a frayed wire on the PS. So I start to inspect the ENTIRE wiring harness starting from the PCM and IDM to each bank. I have found one wire that was shorting on the VC but after repair I am getting the same codes. I am at a complete loss and could really use the help from the members here! I appreciate the help and I am glad to be a member!
