Going ahead and changing my HPOP lines on my truck before snowplow season starts. Can't have any unexpected problems during the winter months and I figure at 246,000 miles they need to be changed. Gonna order them throuh Clay just wanting to know if the tool is required or just a easier way to go?
Easier. You have to spread the connector to get it to release. If you can find just the right tool lying around, it will work fine. The HPOP tool is inexpensive... and it doubles as a bottle opener.
Alright, just placed the order. Passenger side for a early bird and drivers side with the tool. Hate to spend the money but can't afford to have the truck down.

Seth, I think you are spending your money wisely. This way you are replacing it on your terms and not in the middle of plowing in the middle of the night with lake effect snow.
I blew a hpop line on the side of the road last Friday, @ 212k miles, one exit from a Ford dealer, I didn't have a tool so I made one out of a 1" wide putty knife, I have air tools on my truck and a Co2 tank. Not bad for just eyeballing it!
I found the bend at the end made it easier to have leverage to get the head side fitting to release, I did not take anything off the motor other then the blown line. I might dull the end of it as it is still quite sharp. I like the handle on it.
I lost 5 quarts of oil before I had coasted to a stop, I did try to restart it while coasting off the freeway. I am sure I lost more due to that.
There sure is a difference between the old and new lines.
I was pissed, the dealer would not deliver them to me even if I had paid over the phone. I gave the parts guy a piece of my mind when I got there over an hour later.
The tool made from the putty knife looks like a door panel/trim remover tool I have from Snap-On. The HPOP lines; are you guys changing them when they blow a hole or at a certain mileage point? I have two 99s one has 195,000 and the other has 265,000..Thanks....Jeff
My $0.02 is, having just done this last week, the new hoses definitely look beefier than the old ones, and someone posted earlier that the materials are better.
thats SWEET look'n Nsaan Got me a new set on the workbench. Been in the valley for the last week..(mess'n with wvo), thought about changing the lines, but.... Think i'll use one to mock up a tool.

I changed mine at 250K because I put in a bigger HPOP and I just knew they were gunna blow. They take upwards of 2800 PSI on a stock truck... that's gotta introduce some wear, as well as the years.
I changed mine at 113k...but, it's a 2000 and several guys thought it was an age thing, not a mileage thing...and I do not want to change one beside the road.
I did mine yesterday, The little lock tabs broke off some time ago. I just replaced the fittings and lines. Since your in salt country expect a fight. It does feel good when its all said and done knowing you have all new lines and fittings.
