I have a 93 Aerostar. When braking from highway speeds, I get aan extreme vibration back through the steering wheel. The rotors have been replaced, the tie rod ends have also just been replaced but the vibration is still very bad. Any ideas or suggestions?
ok ok I know this one... change your "bearings"? I think its called that.. the inner and outer wheel bearings. And make sure to grease them up. This should fix your problem! I had similar problem until I repaired and greased the bearings, now its all smooth cruisin
I just had a simlar problem also. I thought for sure it was the front rotors. It turned out that both my back axles were slightly bent. Had them replaced and the rear drums turned and I can't remember the brakes working so smooth. I also heard someone suggest pulling on the park bark a little on the highway and you might be able to isolate the problem to the rear.
Since the bearings seemed fine and were well greased and there is no noise or anything else from them, I will let them be for a while.
I tried engaging the parking brake while going down the highway and indeed the vibration started. I think that I will look at the rear brakes first before tearing into the axles.
1990 4.0 Check your brake calipers for wear cracks take them off and look hit the brake pedal that will tell you if the calipers are good .look for a seized calper use a c clamp to squeeze them back do that a couple of times.I hope this helps
My problem has been resolved. After RT suggested looking at the rear axle for the vibration problem and trying the parking brake, it opened my eyes for possiblities other than just the front wheels, rotors and bearings.
I looked at the rear brakes. One side was fine, but on the passenger side, I found that one of the rods which hold the spring on the brake shoes had departed the vehicle. This let one of the brakes shoes sit in its place without being secured.
I got a new pin and re-installed the brake shoes. Everything is back as it should be. This van has run great since I bought it 3 years ago. Runs smooth, drives great. Now it even stops nice and smooth.
Thanks for yours suggestions. This is a great place for info about the Aerostars.
