So I am about 2 weeks out from the laundry list of items I am getting done to my truck. In the process of getting quotes, more than half of the Diesel techs I talked to said that the ARP Studs, which are excellent and very reliable, may be overkill for me.
I tow a 12K GVWR fifth wheel. I Have an Edge Insight. That I use to monitor the engine.
I was fully prepared to go with the Studs and may still.
What I am looking for is your opinion.
Several reputable mechanics have said, the TTY bolts, with properly installed OEM gaskets are more than acceptable. None of them have any problem putting the studs in. They wanted me to be aware that use of TTY bolts shouldn't be discarded as an option.
If you have the means, stud it. You tow heavy, and the price of studs will be cheaper now than the cost of a ruined vacation, tow bills, repairs, and grief down the road, when you're in the middle of nowhere. The studs are no guarantee of reliability, but should be the solution to one of the very common problems.
Right. I don't use anything but setting 2 "Tow" and it is set on 3 "Drive" when I am not towing. I don't mess with anything else. I am not interested in the other settings. I have been using it since August 2011 and it has been a great help. I know there is more passive things out there to use. I may go to one of them shortly, but at this time I have no complaints with the Edge.
I don't understand from your posts if you are adding studs "just because", or thinking about adding studs as part of an already required head gasket replacement. I guess if I were in your position I would include studs in the head gasket job, no question, but I would really hesitate to just do that work if it wasn't already broken. The difference with my situation is I run the truck truly stock, I don't know what the Edge does on those two "tow and drive" settings.
It's a no brainer at this point. Since your gaskets are already compromised and you're having them repaired then STUDS are the only way to complete the repair IMHO.
