Can anyone recommend a driveshaft that will work in my 48.I am using
a 4l60e trans and a ford 9" rear. I talked to a local driveshaft manufacturer today and they wanted $300 to fab one.So if anybody running a GM trans can give me any recommendations I would appreciate it.
You should be able to measure from the axle attachment to the trans yoke, with the yoke pulled out around 2"to allow for axle rebound. Take that measurement to a local junk yard. Last time I did this, they had a semi trailer full of drive shafts to pick from. Find on the right length and then one with the right type and size of U-joints. Although $300 is not a bad price for a balanced and painted drive shaft.
I agree with Joe, $300 is a decent price for an balanced all-new shaft, you aren't likely to save more than $50 modifying a boneyard piece that may be bent..
Wayne, I had a guy up around Goshen make mine for Homade, his place was on the left just past the Holiday Homes Mobile Home place, I think it was 200.00 but that was in 05. I had Cincinnati Driveline make the one for the hauler, 2 piece with new carrier bearing was 415.00, Garry
Im rebuilding a 52 ford and had a similar problem. What I did was found a transmission yoke to fit my transmission(which is a ford f150 5 speed) and measured from center of the Trans. Yoke(pulled out of the tranny about 1 3/4" ) to center of my rear yoke, then took my original driveshaft to a driveshaft shop where to guy is going to cut it down to size, install new u joints, and balance it out for me for around $80.
I'd say try to find a transmission yoke to fit your tranny and see if you can't get your original driveshaft cut down. You should be able to find a yoke at a scrap yard, that's how I found mine. May save you some money.
When I picked up my 351w and the C6 trans, I grabbed the drive shaft from the F150 donor truck. I had the local shop cut it down and put the right U-joint on the back in for 9" that is out of a 65 F100.
The local shop here cut it, welded on the new back end, replaced the U-joint up front, and cleaned/painted it. The whole price was under $200. This is at Bay Area pricing...everything is more expensive here.
I'd follow ranger pat's advice and at least get a donor drive shaft that has the right yoke & take that to your local guy. You should be able to get a decent drive shaft for $20 or so.
Wayne, I have had a vibration in Homade ever since I built it and couldn't find it so Wed I took it to a friend that does all my alighnment, he does everything by the way. He has a machine that he uses to find vibrations and my shaft was out of balance, his machine tells him everything so he was able to take a hose clamp and balance the shaft and also it needed acouple of chims under the trans rear mount, it's amazing how smooth it is now. I'd call Joe at Cincinnati Driveline and get a price, tell him I said to call, Garry I just don't know about the guy in Goshen.
