+++ on the optima. When my OEM batteries fail i always replace with the optimas. no off gassing of Sulfuric acid and thus no corrosion of the terminals or other metal components.
You don't want to use a Deep Cycle battery for a engine starting application.
Well you can, but you should oversize the deep cycle battery if possible to provide more instantaneous current for the cranking application. This kind of application won't damage the battery though. The inverse is not true. And I mean a real thick-plate deep cycle battery, not those so-called "deep cycle starting" ones they sell at department stores.
The best batteries I've ever had are the Die Hard Platinums. But they were spendy. Is your truck out of warranty already? If not I'd get some freebies from Ford.
I second the Die Hard Platinums. They are AGMs and 930cca. I had a leaking terminal on my 6.4 that nearly cost me the whole battery harness. And it did cost me two batteries cause you cant just change one. Go AGM and never look back.

I third the Platinums. Love em. They are pricey tho!
Optima Deep Cycle has always been the way to go for me.
Pricey but strong and safe.
I bought one to eliminate the corrosion problem. Well that's fixed but the truck won't start after it sits awhile. Put the battery in another vehicle with the same results. Warranty won't replace it. Never again!
When replacing only one battery in a dual batt system, the older battery will tend to drain the new battery until both are at equal levels. Effectively decreasing the life of the new battery significantly and doing nothing to prolong the older battery.
I think I remember the owners manual saying to replace BOTH batteries att the same time. I think they said replace at two years or something like that, I gotta read that part again sometime.
For my 2002 I got the biggest battery Auto Zone sold and worked great, it was a V10 though, but still worked perfect until I got the 2011. I probably will look into the Die Hard Platinum, and maybe see what Interstate has to offer.

I didn't say that the battery was in my Ford diesel truck. It was in a single battery 1/2 ton and it discharged after sitting just six days in cold weather. This was repeated again in another vehicle. The fact remains that the Optima battery I bought was a useless piece of junk with a useless warranty and I will never buy one, let alone two, again.

I better explain.
I charged the new Optima Red Top battery fully before I installed it.
For three weeks the vehicle was used as a daily driver.
Then I drove 900 miles to Canada for a snowmobiling trip.
The vehicle was left at the hotel for six days in temperatures from 15 to 36 degrees.
When I went to start it, the battery was too dead to crank. A cheap power pack jumpstarter started it fine.
I took the battery back to Advance Autoparts for replacement, they refused. The battery at this point is five weeks old.
The charging system was checked with five different meters, no problem.
Then I installed the battery in my van with the same results. That system was checked as well.
Not that I'm a fan of optimas but that's weird. When u say the battery was 5 weeks old is that from time purchased or the manufacture date on the battery?
Your right it shouldn't affect warranty but it sounds like u just got a bum deal. Die hard warranty is great tho. Also there is no way to know if the store u bought from let the battery sit on the ground for months before selling it.
