Ex will not start

2000 Excursion 6.8 V10 4x4. It will not start, just a click coming from underneath the dash with the turn of the key to crank. I read a couple of the other threads thinking I have what they did I'm now reconsidering that notion. My theft light does not flash fast, it just turns off. I have hit the fuel reset. Checked all fuses under the dash. The only thing I can think of is the key is not communicating with the truck? Unfortunately I only have one key, can I make a duplicate anyway?

I have not driven this truck since I bought it back in July, I got it for $2800 and it needed a lot of work, among those things the whole front end needed replacement parts ball joints well bearings knuckles, brakes calipers. Then I had to redo the whole exhaust there was not one nut on a header that a socket would fit so all had to be cut off. That by far was very frustrating, until the dipstick broke off at the oil pan that was even far worse. I am afraid to remove the bolts because every bolt I turn it snaps off even with heat, that brings me to the starter and the problem above, snapped off 2 nuts with that.

Anyways I had it running the other night and the next morning I pounded on one of the running boards to straighten it out and then hoped in to start it and nothing. I am at my wits end. A little guidance would be appreciated before I put a sledge hammer through this thing. With all the rust under this thing I probably knocked out something.

Feel your pain with the rusted front end - it can be restored with patience.

On the no start - do you have interior lights when you open the door?
Ground wires? I had several that were rusted off and one happens to be very close to the running board. These caused all kinds of electrical issues.

Yes I have interior lights but a ground close to the running board could be a possibility if there is one there for starting purposes. Couldn't hurt I suppose.

Everything looks okay on the driver side under the running board I only see the wires for the lights on the boards. My key however has a good crack in it, I am wondering if that is what it is. Going to make a trip to the dealership see if I can get a key made.

    Motor Ground Circuit
NOTE: Make all multimeter connections at the component terminal rather than the cable or wiring terminal.
A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows:
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connector from the ignition coil.
    1. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid S-terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
    1. Connect the positive (+) lead of the 73III Automotive Meter to the starter motor housing. The connection must be clean and free of rust or grease. Connect the negative (-) lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.
    1. Engage the remote starter switch and read the voltage. The reading should be 0.2 volt or less.
    1. If the voltage drop is greater than 0.2 volt, clean the negative (-) battery cable connections at the battery and chassis. Also, clean the engine ground cable connection at the cable mounting bracket. If the voltage drop is still excessive, repair or install a new battery ground cable.

No the battery reads 12.4 V that should be good to crank it over shouldn't it?

Battery terminals are spotless, and tight. Ignition test, I would have to say no. How abouts do I do that?

Or is there a starter relay? Are wires on starter tight? Might need to take starter to be tested.

I bought the starter new at Auto Zone but I did not see them test it. I have been handed a bad one in the past.
