Confirm: Replace T-Stat?

On my "new" '06 F-250... every now and then while running WOT I get my ECT up to 188-190, but normally it stays in the low 180s. EOT typically stays within 6, but at WOT it'll get up to 9 delta. I'm about 7500 feet up in the Rockies and ambient temps are in the 60s. I'm assuming that even with cooler temps, I should still be seeing around 190 on my ECT if my t-stat is good, right?

So I should pop a new t-stat in it to see if my ECT will get on up to 190+? Most of my trips are around 30 minutes and I'm only up to 60mph+ for about 8 of those minutes, so normally I wouldn't be surprised if it never made it up to 190+, however my average was 184 on a 6 hour drive home from the dealer, driving up and over the continental divide... Seems to me it definitely should have made it to 190.

Is the t-stat something I need to get from Tousley or can I pick that up from carquest or NAPA?

Thanks guys!

Most of the auto parts chain should have that t-stat for about $25, mine was acting the same way. Get a gallon of coolant along with your new t-stat. The thermostat is huge, compared to the v-10 on the left.

Yeah, I'm putting in a coolant filter and doing a full flush and swap to EC-1 coolant in a couple weeks... I'll do the t-stat then. Thanks!

Just a note... I have changed 2 thermostats out on my truck. The original I assume was motorcraft (bought the truck used). I had low temps. Went to NAPA, got another one. Worked for a few months then went to low temps again. Changed the thermostat back out a second time. Temps were fine for a while but began to sag. I was at about 170F when I went to Ford and bought another thermostat. A Motorcraft this time. My temperatures have been good ever since.

I did notice that there was a significant difference in the upper spring as far as size and thickness.

I would recommend going with Motorcraft.

Thanks, Eric! I'll order mine from Tousley, then... I've been really impressed with their speed and service! On an order of gasket parts for an oil cooler replacement, in the confirmation e-mail they told me that they weren't shipping one set of gaskets cause it was a duplicate of parts included in another kit I had also ordered... very unusual for a company to NOT make a sale in order to benefit the customer who made the mistake. Thanks, Tousley!

I suggest you price it from your local Ford dealer.
Sometimes the parts are cheap enough I just get it "now" and save shipping.
I'm thinking it's in the $30-40 range but it's been 2 years...

Good luck!

Yeah, I'm gonna try that, but my local dealer is 90 minutes away, so unless I have to go to the city for something else, its usually not worth my time and fuel.

Another tip, being a veteran of T-Stat change out, you can get the T-Stat out with out a bunch of removal of other things. I use the following:

8" 3/8" drive extension
3" 3/8" drive extension
3/8" ratchet
10MM Socket
3/8" drive universal joint
double sided tape

Open the radiator drain plug and remove about 2 gallons of coolant. Loosen the radiator hose clamp at the radiator. (large tube)
Loosen the front T-Stat bolt and the rear T-Stat bolt.
Remove the T-Stat front bolt.
Using double sided tape in the socket, remove the rear T-Stat bolt. The tape will prevent losing the bolt and will allow you to put it back in with little effort.
Slip the large hose off its fitting at the radiator.
Pinch the tube while pushing down and rotate the hose 180 degrees to the right and lift the T-Stat and hose out.

Ensure you have nothing in the area that could drop into the open T-Stat port. Cover it as necessary until you're ready to reinstall the T-Stat.

Reassemble in reverse order. It's a pretty quick job.

Hopefully the last one I will have to do in a while!
