Timing pointer problem

After having rebuild installed and broke in realized pointer was missing on new timing chain cover.Found old "same cover" did not have pointer either.
The timing chain cover has 2 small holes on a approx 45 degree angle no large hole.I am confused on what pointer i need and will it be accurate for TDC reference point.
TDC was done with engine partially apart
Any help would be great.

So if i remove #1 plug and measure TDC on compression stroke i can then make sure new pointer is referencing TDC ON HARMONIC BALANCER...CORRECT

What motor? Most FE's use one large hole and then the small hole.

Yes, if you can determine TDC close enough, you can set a new pointer. Use a stop, rotate crank back and forth against the stop. Mark each point it stops. The middle of those two points is TDC.

After looking up this part i see it has 1 large hole and 1 small hole and i need a pointer for 2 small holes and it needs to be about 5" long from base to end of pointer.

It's the only pointer listed in the truck parts catalog for your application. What's the timing cover from? Look on the puppy, it will have an ID number marked on it, post what it is.

C9AZ-6023-A pointer replaced C3AZ-6023-A pointer / In the 1960/64 Ford car parts catalog, it lists C3AZ-6023-A as 3 1/16" O/A length with (2) 7/32" holes.

I could not find any specs for C9AZ-6023-A in the 1965/72 car, 1964/72 & 1973/79 truck parts catalogs. While the length may be different, I doubt the 2 holes would be anything other than 7/32."

There are two style pointers that I'm aware of. One has a large bolt hole and a small one and attaches using one of the timing cover bolts in the large hole and a small 5/16" headed screw in the other hole.
The other style timing pointer has two small holes and attaches with two small 5/16" headed screws.
Go to ebay motors, type in 390 timing pointer and see the two styles.
