Question wierd timing

heres one for you. 65 390 we just swapped it into the 66 4x4. we can get the truck to run but heres whats wierd. the marks on the pulley are way off (so no light can be used after the startup), and once you get the misses out and tune the carb sounds really good, but it either dies after a while or it has no power. we have replaced and gapped the points, swapped distibuters, new coil, new battery, and checked the charging system, im usually pretty good with this kind of stuff but im lost help

Index the motor.
If you have not changed the damper or timing cover you should be able to bring #1 to TDC and verify four things:
The piston is at top dead center. Yep, the now infamous dowel through the spark plug hole trick.
Both intake and exhaust valves are closed.
The timing pointer is on 0* (TDC).
The distrubitor rotor is very close to the #1 position of the cap.

Do yourself a favor, remove all the plugs and turn the crank by hand. As you check the piston for top center you'll notice that the crank turns a little before the piston starts going down. That's piston dwell time, if you are patient you can center the piston at dwell. The timing pointer should be dead nuts on 0*. If not, take a closer look at the vibration damper. I've learned through this forum that the timing ring can slip. Haven't suffered the misforutune...yet.
The valve timing should correspond to the piston event, trust that measurement before the timing marks.

do as HYPOID said, if the distributor is off or it doesn't run right when its set at number one you may have a timing chain that has jumped, hope not...good luck
