Guys, I have what I think are the original tires on the 05, X limited 4x4 that I bought a couple of years ago and it's time for new tires so I'd like some recommendations.
What's on there right now is
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--> BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A
LT265/75R16
They have lasted long as I have a little over 60k miles on it and they're still going pretty strong. However, I don't much like the handling in RAIN.
I don't go OFF road but needless to say, it wouldn't be bad if it would be DECENT off road, just in case.
My main concern is a good ride, long lasting and good in rain.
I don't drive like a nut, I don't tow and it's just me so not a lot of weight.
I drive mostly local and also want to note that right now, the wheels vibrate when I hit around 70mph and not sure what that is.
I was told at the ford service place that this is the way these/trucks/tires ride at that speed and of course, I accepted this as the truth..
I am close to Charlotte, NC so if anyone should have some good tires at a good price (ie, upgraded to bigger tires or whatever), feel free to let me know but since I don't check the email often, just post a comment here to contact you.
I would like something that rides smooth so not an aggressive road tire.
Michelin LTX MS2
best all season light truck tire. smooth with great grip in snow and rain. they stay balanced better than most. IMHO. Michelin LTX MS2 I have put these on 5 different trucks with great results.
I second the Michelins I have the LTX A/T2's on my F250 and they are the second best snow tire I have had (second to the Bridgestone Revo's). Otherwise if you want some grips with a lot of tread depth get Mickey Thomson Baja ATXs, made in Ohio I believe.
Ok, I looked at the local craigslist and I found a bunch of tires but there are things I don't understand such as load range and do they have to have LT in front of the numers/size?
Also, do I need exactly 265/75?
Found something here that seemed interesting but don't know a thing about the tires/brand/model
"For sale are five 265/75/16 Dunlop Rover H/T Tires. all 5 tires have 11/32 of tread. (new has 12/32). Almost brand new tires. were on a 2010 Hummer H3"
Even though you stated you don't tow and it's usually only you, the Excursion is a heavy vehicle and I would highly recommend a load range E tire. Your tires are a big part of a safe vehicle.
265/75 16 is the stock size that came on the X. Anything else will throw off the speedo. (not much, but some, and this can be corrected using a programmer) I believe the only way to get load range E tires is in LT (light truck). Hope this helps!
Lt means light truck where as p means passenger vehicle. This is not of any real importance as long as you are at least load range D, E recommended. As for size the first number is width in mm, second number is "aspect ratio" the percentage of height in comparison to width. So these tires are 75% as tall asthey are wide. Confusing as hell and stupid as ****! Should just say width and height!
Changing the width but keeping the same aspect ratio will increase the tires height etc.
Skinny tires do better in rain and snow because it penetrates through where wider tires are more likely to hydroplane (also very dependant on tread speed weight etc) but have more traction on ice. Changing tire height (circumference) will change the speedometer some depending on how much of a change.
Thanks Joe.
So, could I hypothetically get a 265/65 tire and it would work fine on my X or not?
Found these for sale " Michelin LTX A/T 2 Load range E tires that are size 265/75/16"
He says they have 15k miles on them. Is under $500 bucks for the tires ONLY a good buy?
