Gear Ratios

I am looking at buying a new SD, SRW 4X4 diesel. My concern is all I can find is a 3.55 gear ratio. That seems a bit high to me for towing. I've been known to put a bunch of weight on my flat bed, but for the most part it would be hwy driving.
My '01 has 3.73 and I always thought that was a bit high.
Will the greater HP and torque output with 6.7 compensate for the difference?
With 90% of my driving being city and open road empty I'm thinking the higher ratio might help with the fuel. Or should I order a 2013 and then I can get the 3.73.
Thoughts????????

yes it makes a huge difference over the 6.0 and 3.73s. what kind of numbers are we talking here for weight.

The 3:73 gears are only available with the dually diesel not the single axle. With 800 ft/lbs of torque 3:55s would work for me.

I guess, anymore, I would pull a max of 10,000 lbs and not very often.
I can get 3.73's if I order 2013, but I was thinking of getting a better deal buying a '12 off the lot.

I routinely pull 14,000 lbs. with mine, with absolutely no effort. Don't sweat it. Is 3.73 available on the '13s with SRW ?

Are you 100% sure you can order 3:73s? Who is telling you that you can order 3:73s with a diesel. Yes, they are standard for the 6.2L. I just went to the Ford site and you can't build a diesel SRW with 3:73s.

Well, it was a Ford salesman. Come to think of it........his lips were moving, so there is a good chance he was telling a fib.
I don't really mind the higher ratio if it will do the job. I'm thinking better fuel miles when I'm doing my DD.

Never trust a salesman!! I see you are a fellow Canuck. Did you go to Ford.ca and try to build your truck?

Just and observation, the 3:31s and 3:55s have both the same tow ratings.

You can build a 2012, but that won't do any good. As of yesterday it won't allow a build on a 2013 yet.
I can find plenty of 2012s with discounts that apply, but for that much money I want it to have everything I want in a truck.
I also would like to know about the LSD in these new trucks.
I put a Tru-Trac in my '01 and really liked it. I don't know anything about an e-locker I believe they call it. Anyone have any experience with it?

I just went to the Ford site, and it will allow the build and price now. I will do that and see what I get.
The dealer says late December would be earliest delivery.

I have the 6.7L with 3.55's and the stock 33" tires (Lariat 18" wheels with FX4 Michelin AT2's), and pulling about 15k worth of gooseneck behind me I have actually spun the tires once or twice starting out from a stoplight. There's more power there than the tires can put to the pavement. 3.73's are unnecessary for what you're looking at.

I have it and use it. The first time I used it was pulling a boat out of the lake up a slick concrete ramp, where it made it out without a single slip. I routinely have to drive through soft muddy ground or occasionally a plowed field or otherwise unpaved surfaces, and the LSD works well enough for most things especially if you're not towing or hauling anything through it. But being able to lock the rear is a huge reassurance and really helps make even the worst conditions a cakewalk, especially pulling a trailer across mud. With the LSD it has to start spinning for it to go into action. With a locked rear it's just plain locked, the torque split 50-50 between each wheel, and there's no drama. I wouldn't have it any other way...I just wish I had it for the front, too!

No sweat Spud.
Here's what I've found.....2012 F350, 4X4, 6.7, King Ranch, remote start, moon roof, nav, spray liner, tall bed cap, 20" chrome wheels, blah blah. You know the drill, it has everything.
18,000 kilo, show room shape. The only thing I would want different would be an 8 ft bed. This one has 6 3/4. I can live with that in my old age.
Asking price is 56,000 inflated Canadian dollars.
I've got two landscape/snow removal guys clammering for my 2001 at 11,000 Cdn.
The same truck new comes in at about 80,000 +/- Cdn, around here with poor selection.
I think I will buy it today.
