Front Diff

First, a big thanx to FTE for all the good info.

Truck is an 01 DRW 4wd.

Questions are:
What is it?
What fluid?
Where should this vent hose go?

and
Should it skip tires like a locked diff?
I have put about 105,000 miles on her only about 100 in H4 and 2 in L4.

Before anyone asks, no I don't have a huge oil leak anymore and nowhere in the guidlines for changing gallons of atf from various places does it say "Do not run over gallon jugs after the test drive".

Dont know the best fluid. But the vent hose on mine goes straight up and hooks in the frame to keep all the water and trash out. Someone will chime in with fluid.

It will be either a Dana 50 or Dana 60 there will be a three digit model number is cast into the center section, upside down, on the passenger side above the horizontal reinforcement rib. The three digit model number is also on the paper assembly tag in a box in the bottom right corner.
In my case, a 2000 F350 SRW has a Dana 50 or Model 229.

Dana 50 = 229
Dana 60 = 248
Dana 70 = 267
Dana 80 = 286

You can also measure the housing...

Measure from the mounting surface of the diff cover (on the housing) back to the very end of the housing where the pinion comes out.

edge of housing to edge of housing = 12.5" = D50

edge of housing to edge of housing = 13.5" = D60

As for the oil I believe all require 75W-140 on the fronts.

The vent, is suppose to go up to the frame.

I thought all DRW trucks had the D60, which is why they stopped offering the D50 around 2001. Also, Alan, the front diff takes 75w-90, not 75w-140. The 140 weight is for the 10.5 'round back.

EDIT: I just confirmed on page 53 of the Ford Fleet Specifications document, that all DRW F350s had the D60.

It was hit or miss as I understood it, nevertheless the stamp would verify.

And I put 75W-140 all around.

I dont hang around the DRW too often but I thought they ALL had D60s, and the hit or miss was on SRW trucks. At least thats what I have always understood and what is indicated by the Fleet Specs document.

I have heard that as well. Trey, about the DRW. Just figured it wouldn't hurt to look at the raised number...or sticker if it exists if nothing more than to completely validate it.

Definitely wouldnt hurt. If its a D50 it would be good to prove that the D50 was on some DRW.

Thanx guys,

I had to wait on the sun to get a good look.

D 60 it is #248

75w 90 for either 50 or 60 according to the Owners Guide.

I am guessing that the vent hose ran up and thru the plastic clip that holds fuel lines.
