Fuel mileage question

So I decided to buy a 2012 truck with the 6.7. What a beast while towing.

What the heck should I really expect for fuel economy? Ther are times when I am getting ~20 mpg at 60mph then it will start dropping rapidly down to 11.5. This concerns me.
What is causing this?

What are you getting?

How long does it drop down for? Truck might be going through a regen, causing the mpg to drop? Shouldn't last longer then 20 mins.

Holy cow. 20 minutes! It last for about 10- 15 minutes. How often does this happen? So this truck uses DEF and does a REGEN?

20 mins would be the longest, I probabaly get a regen every couple hunderd k, depending on your driving, city, highway, etc. The regen is done by the truck dumping extra fuel to burn the soot from the dpf, causing the drop in mpg.

Happens much more frequently than that for me. I'll have to pay closer attention.

So what is your average MPG (or KPG)

My average right now is 16.5 mpg. I can see around 20 mpg on the highway, my lowest was 14.6 in the winter, winter fuel.

Do you do alot of city driving? That will probably cause more regens.

Nope. Hardly any. Almost all HWY or interstate. I kept hearing all these stories of great fuel economy. This is averaging near what my V10 was getting. Bums me out.

BTW- I drive very conservatively. I drive with a very light foot and do my best to maximize fuel economy.

It will get better. My rig did a lot of regens when I first got it. Not sure why, but they're getting fewer and farther between now. I seem to remember reading in another thread where a member, with an Edge Insight, noticed the regen lasted 6 or 7 miles.

When I first bought my truck I took a 2600 mile trip empty and was getting 17.5 at 75 to 80 and 19+ at 60-65 hand calculated. My 6.4 wouldn't get better than 15 ever.

if you are avg 14-15 around town, 18-19 on the hiway. 11-12 towing, You are in line with what most folks are getting.

Well I haven't driven enough to figure it all out yet. My first trip was towing and I got ~ 13.5 average. It was hand calculated and within 0.5 of the displayed average. I have only burned one tank since then and averaged ~15 empty. The truck has 2300 miles on it. I have only put ~ 900 miles on it total since I bought it.
