My truck has a lifetime average of 14.6mpg over the 5000 miles i have put on it. I would say that about 1500 miles of that is towing 10Klbs camper, and the rest is probably even mix of hwy and city....maybe leaning a little more to the city side. so roughly 1/3 towing, 1/3 city, and 1/3 hwy.
i have a picture to prove it....i have not reset my TripB so it has accumulated all the miles, gallons, etc on that one. All miles except .5 that i guess the factory put before resetting it.
Here are my observations on a recent trip from Houston to Dallas to Houston.
Same tank of fuel gave me 19 on the way to Dallas and 17 on the way back. No increase in payload. Same road same speed.
Wind plays a major role in MPG. IMHO
Waco to San Antonio and back yesterday.. took the toll road around Austin and cruised at 80 both ways.. kept to 5 mph or so above the speed limit the rest of the time.. pump to pump 457 miles, hand calulated 22.29268... I'm loving this
Wow, if you can get a solid 22 mpg at 80 mph, thats great.
When I go on longer trips and set the cruise at 80 mph, My avg comes in at 18.0 to 18.5 mpg. I've done that with several trucks on numerous trips. So I'm pretty comfortable that is a good avg for these trucks. At least the 4x4 versions.
My trip yesterday was 206 miles. I went from my home at 4480 foot elevation up and over the scenic byway at 10,700 foot and returned home. So some serious elevation climbs. Most of the trip was 70 mph with some 55 mph on the curvy mountainous stretches. We are definitely on winter grade fuel here now. I had some wet and slushy roads up near the summit and definitely some colder temps. I stopped numerous times to just get out and enjoy the scenry. My trip showed I used 9.9 gallons at 20.7 mpg, My fill up at the gas station showed 9.4 gallons at 21.9 gallons. So these trucks can do it when empty.
I've also seen some 7.5 mpg mileage when towing against headwinds. And you can see my fuelly avg below for the 74,000 of my trucks life.
Yep... I'm running what I guess is a stripped down XL SRW 2WD CC 8' bed 3:31 gears.. 10K package.. Towing my 7K TT I've gotten 12-14 depending on wind and road.. but empty this thing is going nuts since I started using the PM-22 cetane booster... No winter fuel here... I did live 4 years in Colorado and know what it is...though
I ran another tank and I got 17.01 mpg (hand calculated) the read out said 16.9. I'd say the computer is accurate. Last time the computer was slightly higher. I think foaming will cause my hand calculations to vary.
This tank had a mix of Hwy, city, and towing. I am pleased. Better power and comfort than my 7.3 or 5.9 with no penalty at the pump.
