HI, I have an 1992 f250 4x4 with an 7.5 liter 460 in it. Its 2 door with an ext. cab and long bed. It has an brand new crate engine with around 3000 miles on it. It has an k&n air filter on it currently and rest is just bare bones stock. I'm trying to find some low cost but high quality performance parts to increase the h.p. under the hood. I have decent automotive knowledge but I don't want to do a complete rebuild because this is my daily driver. All I have figured out is that im going with a pair of hedman long tube headers and a glass pack muffler. Any more ideas?
In a few months im going against my brothers Chevy 2500 4x4 2 door long bed with an 350 bored over 30 and I want to beat him
If your not opposed to it, yank the heads off and port and polish them. Add a cam and the exhaust your talking about and it would awaken that 460 up a little bit.
Probably a little too much for me right now but I have been looking at an supercharger kit in a year or two. I just cant find one that would fit my 460. I know it will cost me 3500 to 5000 dollars for the kit and insallation. Do you know any website that has them and the link to it? I have also been looking for a nos system mainly for show but also just in case I get in a drag race I need a little boost for. Plus do you have any idea how to help the mpg since a supercharger will kill it. Thanks in advance
Well at least you'll be up against a truck with a similar weight, and you're not racing a Mustang or a Camaro. If you ask me, you should check to see what rear end gears you have. If you don't have 4.10 gears, you should upgrade to them for far better acceleration. I don't know how you feel about the idea, but there are a couple people I know of with turbochargers on their 460s, and one has a twin turbo set up on a stroker 460 (don't remember the c.i. size off hand). But with any kind of super charger, I'm doubtful that your computer will like it, so you're going to need computer work to go along with your power. Don't even waste money on nitrous, even if its just going to be a show off thing. You'll probably just end up wrecking stuff.
Don't forget that a supercharger usually requires a drop in compression and upgraded internals like the crank rods and poisons. Then you need a new oil pump cam and usually cylinder heads. I had a friend that "just wanted to slap a supercharger on". It ended up being around 8g and then he destroyed the tranny. Look into having a shop do performance rebuild. Or buy a nice crate engine.
I ran a Vortech supercharger on my '96 F350/460 Supercab dually. You won't believe what 5# of boost will do to a stock motor(without hurting things). Truck ran 15.8's in the 1/4 mile, which back in '97 was knocking on the door of lightnings.
Unfortunately I don't think Vortech still offers kits. Have to piece one together?
IF your looking for inexpensive stuff for the time being do a cold air intake and headers and exhaust. The best thing you can do is get the air in and back out faster. I wouldn't do glass packs as the engine will perform better with a little back pressure. I have been using cherry bomb pro welded mufflers and they perform and sound great. But that's just my experience with these engines your going to get a multitude of opinions.
I understand that I will need to upgrade the pistons, camshaft, and similar parts. After thinking about the nos iv'e decided its a bad idea. Although it works good properly installed if it isn't installed properly installed ill be in the back of an ambulance or worse. How do I check the gear ratio? Iv'e been told to do this over and over but I have the slightest idea. My end plan for this truck is to drop an lift, oversized tires, and convert it into a high performance off roader/bogger. By the end of it I should have close to 15 grand into it. It probably would be cheaper to drop an 7.3 liter diesel engine and upgrade it, but I love the 460 in it and it is perty much brand new with only a few thousand miles on it
