I recently bought an 05 Lariat with a 3:55 rear end. I am looking to change that out to a 3:05 to increase my fuel mileage. What kind of gain can I expect after I do this. The truck has the 5.4 engine and runs really well I just need to get better mpg. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
In my opinion, you probably aren't going to save enough gas to pay for this modification.
I would have to agree with this. Gear changes are expensive. If you have a 4x4, you can double the price as well. Plus, I think you will beat yourself up over the performance decrease you would get. 3:05s are going to suck on the performance end.
First question should be, what mileage do you currently get, in what kind of driving, how heavy is your foot.
Drive for a week with a very light foot, and re-calculate your mileage again.
1. Expense: figure about $700 per axle
2. Economy: on paper you should see a MPG gain, but in reality you will see it go down. Your motor in overdrive is designed to work at a certain rpm. Raising the gear ratio will drop it out of that rpm range. You'll be lucky if it can maintain 4th at 60 mph
I agree with the rest, gears are not a cost effective mpg saver. Driving style will help more than anything.
Also, if you want good gas mileage a full size truck was a poor choice
I have a 2007 F150 V6 5 Speed, I changed the gear ratio from 3.31 to 3.73 and my gas mileage improved. The change you are contemplating will disappoint you from both a performance and economy perspective.

For each .25 gear ratio change, the rpm's change by 300....so that will give you an idea...probably see 1-2 MPG gain hwy, probably loose 1-2 mpg city.
