1996 Ford Explorer Coolant leak

I'm leaking coolant around the #3 cylinder exhaust port. Could
it be the intake manifold leaking allowing coolant into the cylinder?
Or a head gasket leaking?

Hi donhclark and welcome to FTE

Unfortunately I wouldnt be surprised if your cylinder head was cracked
I've seen a few of these. Take a light and look real closely. You might need a mirror too.

If the leak is on the passenger side of the engine then it is most likely that its your heater control valve. I had that same problem a few months ago. good luck.

Hi Dave and thanks for the info. I did have good look buts hard
to see back there. Its kind of messy with antifreeze around that area. Would I be having overheating problems if the head was cracked?

If it's an external leak it probably wouldnt overheat until the coolant level was very low. Like Cobra413 said though take a good look for aleak from the heater hoses too.
Most dealers have black lights to check for leaks. They put a dye in the coolant and run the engine a while and the check it with the black light. You might want to have that done if you cant find the leak easily.

Dave I'll have a look at the heater valve. I do believe that I'm getting some antifreeze into that cylinder as I pulled the spark plug and its a whiteish colour. Also when I first start up the vehicle it misfires for a minute or so. I checked tonight to see if the
intake manifold was loose but all the bolts were snug. I guess I'll have to go deeper.

don,
I would definetly check they heater control valve. I had the same problem with it leaking and it caused my check engine light to come on. The coolant was dripping onto the #3 plug wire and ate it up. Caused a miss and eventually check eng.
