It's my 92 150 4x4 4.9L 5spd. Once in a while my shifter gets stuck in third. Sometimes playing around with it will get it unstuck, other times I have to take the top off the trans and move this little pin back into place. I'm getting tired of dealing with it, is there a way to fix this?
Here's a photo of what's happening. Seems like the shift rod is getting moved too far and then this pin walks out sideways and gets lodged against the housing. I'm going to just take it out temporarily, I'm more worried about the pin coming all the way out and trashing something expensive in the trans.
I just had my M5R2 cover off/apart and while I recall there were ***** and pins to contend with, I only recall having a minor issue with one of the ***** - it had to be held down under spring pressure while sliding the rod back into place.
So yea, I would say you've got something out of place with the way that pin is about to fall out. I'm thinking the rod needs to go further in one direction to retain the pin.
Maybe someone else can give you more specific feedback. If you want, check for some recent pictures I posted of the back-side of the cover - search my ID and "M5OD" and/or "M5R2".
I looked at this some more and tried to remember how things came apart on mine. Then I noticed the retainer pin for the fork (top of pic) and I'm wondering if perhaps it got left out of the center and/or right rod (as pictured) and is thus allowing the center rod to travel further than it should - indeed it appears that it has "over-travelled" to me.
I will look into that as soon as I can. I did just remove the pin and put it all back together, got too much that I have to get done today. I don't like "fixing" it like this, but it really doesn't appear to have much purpose, at least that I can readily see. I know it's there for some reason, as soon as I figure out what that is, or how to properly fix it, I'll just be shifting like a little old lady. Thanks for the suggestion!
I wouldn't trust that for very long like that. If you get a little bit of friction between the fork and rod you might see it in your rearview mirror. BTW, next time you have that cover off you might as well replace the 3 rear rubber seals with freeze plugs. Simple job and you'll stop leaking fluid that way.
I'm actually heading over to my dad's, get another set of eyes looking at it. I have tried the freeze plugs, but having bought sets from four different places, couldn't find a one that fit properly, even tried peening the center of a few to make the edges spread out a bit more, still no luck. I have read where people have used a quality RTV sealer on the plugs before inserting them with good luck, and I will probably do that tonight, give it time to dry up thoroughly.
And if all else fails, I'm head to the local pull-it-yourself yard to find a replacement, should run me about $30-40.
I got my freeze plugs from Allstate gear - they knew what I was talking about - had them SKU'd as a set of three for $10 I think.
It's a bit of a crap-shoot on what the U-Pull-It might charge for the top cover. I imagine some of them might want to charge you for the whole transmission. I only got charged $5 for the fork since the girl didn't know what it was.
