Good to know. So i guess I won't totally scrap it then. I'll keep it for pulling codes.
As I stated, I changed from the "Tow" program to the "Stock" program last night. Drove it to work this morning and again at lunch, and I could tell a big difference. I liked it better with the Tow program! It seemed to lag in the fuel response and torque in the stock mode, though the tranny seemed to shift better in stock mode. But I'm going to resist the urge to use it, per all the advice on here, and worry about tunes later. I don't really need it anyway...just like the little extra power.
The biggest issues with the Edge programmers seem to come from people who change tunes frequently. The issue is that the "programmer" is exactly that. It reprograms the PCM whenever you switch tunes. So if anything happens in the process of that reprogramming, it corrupts the data on the PCM and then you have a PCM that wont work and often won't even link up with the programmer to return it to stock. The tunes are okay (from what I hear you could compare them to stock "canned" tunes on a TS 6 position chip) but there is no comparison between these tunes and a good custom tune from someone who knows what they need to do to make these trucks run.
I'm not out to badmouth the Edge stuff, but there are better alternatives for tunes and better ways to accomplish the tuning than reprogramming the PCM. These Edge issues are not limited to our trucks either. I had a '99 F-150 before this and there were a lot of guys that had the Edge Evolution on their trucks and bricked their PCMs. Best case scenario, they took it to the dealer and had the PCM re-flashed to stock, but some of them couldn't even do that and had to buy a new PCM.
If you're happy with the tunes you have in there from your Edge, that's great. Leave them in there, don't mess with it and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Again, it seems that there is no problem with the tunes themselves (except that you can get better tuning) it is just when people are changing tunes that they seem to have issues.
100% agree,
they are just canned tunes nothing special. I just never got around to getting a chip with custom tunes.
my truck gets 17.89 mpg empty. and I just filled it up today 15.4 mpg all towing, so I just never got motivated to get custom tunes.
I would probably not spend money on an edge if I was buying! I would go with custom tunes.
Could we use the Edge to pull codes from all our trucks, or is it specific to one vin#? Does it just pull codes, or can you look at any other data with it?

Man... Those numbers make me want to go dig my old bully dog power pup out... Hell with the transmission if I could get 2.5 mpg.
I know they're VIN locked for tuning (you have to return one truck to stock before you can tune another) but I don't know for just diagnostics and pulling codes.
Thanks for the link Todd...now I want a chip! I could tell a big difference coming out of that Tow program with the Edge back to stock. Now I sorta wish I would have left it, but based on everyone's advice this is better. I've got too much to do now with getting the new CC caught up on maintenance, then swapping the trannys in both trucks...won't be able to afford a chip for a while. And Christmas is right around the corner...got to save up for that too.
