Winter - weight

Just popped up in my mind: with winter around the corner, is it better to add weight in the box, or down on the axel; in other words, weight is better above suspension, or below?
Thanks for your opinions!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

In the box, ahead of the axle, preferrably braced against the front so it won't move. Sand or kitty litter is good as you can get some of the contents and use them for traction on ice or compacted snow. Good tires recommended also.

I have always put the weight directly over the axle in the bed. This puts the most weight on the rear wheels without adding weight to the front wheels where you don't need it. You also don't want weight all the way in the back because you want it as centralized as possible to where you want the weight effecting the wheels. Far back weight is just as bad as high weight.

eh if i'm adding weight i'll add it as far back as I can. I have a nice heavy diesel, and a ranch-hand winch and bumper on the front. I never carry weight just for the sake of weight but it needs all the counter balance it can get. I have seen some guys use the weight plates from a tractor. they built a false floor out of wood planks with cutouts to fit the weights.
