cleaing up someone elses mess
I acquired a 2002 ex with the 5.4 liter in it and have been trying to track down why it doesnt have much power. I bought a set of plugs and started installing them. I started on the passengers side and made it to the last one on the side and hace ran into a problem. When takeing the coil off, I noticed it just came right out. No resistance at all. I blew the spark plug well out with air and tried to remove the plug. I could not get it to grab over the plug. I finally took a mirror and looked down the well and it looks like there is a plug in the threads but not enough to attack to so it can be removed. I had a hard time looking down the well so wasnt 100% convinced on what I was looking at. I started the engine and and put my hand over the hole and there wasnt any compression coming from it.
How am I suppost to get the rest of the plug out? I am hoping I dont have to remove the head. Is it going to cost me an arm and a leg?

The early 5.4s were known for spitting plugs and the later 3 valve 5.4s for plugs breaking upon removal due to an inherently flawed 2 piece plug design. Numerous threads address these fairly common problems. Use the search function in the modular motors forums and I'm sure you'll get multiple hits. If I had more time I'd post a few links.

Just a few other thoughts
some have experienced that there is crud still packed around the spark plug not allowing the spark plug socket to engage properly.
Basically they went to the hardware store & got a short piece of copper tubing that would just go over the spark plug and spin freely and notch the 1 wall of the tube. make it Just long enough to get above engine in the troubled location on the engine.
give it a few turns and this loosens the packed in crud so well a delivered air blast extracts the now loose crud.
Now the spark plug socket will/should fit well enough to engage properly ...if not repeat & try again
