Yours looks just as bad as mine did. If you look close as the cross bars roll to the rear, there is a very small lip and then more plastic. I stopped removing the paint at that small lip. Makes the bars look like they are suspended. I also did not do the upright bars because they started behind that lip also.
Use an old towel and flip often. The thinner evaporates fast so use it a bit at a time. Sometimes, I did just a finger tip at a time. Do a sample spot under the top cross bar I did not remove the grill either.
As to the chrome being there, I would say if it has the chrome border, it will most likely be chromed all the way. Real hard to chrome "part" of a piece of plastic for assembly line work. If the entire grill is painted....no chrome would be my bet.....but if it already looks bad, repaint is needed anyway.
Huh....mine was black....light gray....then chrome. Really don't see why the difference but there must be some level of confusion at Ford. I searched and found numerous postings on different sites with my results....
Did you have any problems with the overlay? In the second link it looks like the Ford emblem is way back, like the overlay sits out too far or is that not the final resting place? The link I posted is an actual insert, ever had one of those?
I'm really impressed with how AzPete's grill came out, might look into simply buying the aftermarket chrome grill.
Now I'm motivated to go get paint thinner and try that on my grill, since I can see chrom where the paint has rock chipped off. It looks almost like the PO did it so the black cattle pusher wouldn't look odd out in front.

Say, I have a brand new can of laquer thinner for sale. Lolz!! I got so excited I ran right and bought it and tried it.
The overlay just sticks on with good double sided tape, like auto vent shades, so it does stick out a little, I honestly didn't like it but it was on the truck when I bought it, and still was a year or so later when I sold it.
I had a SS speed grill honeycomb grill which is inserts on an old suburban I had. Never had any issues, they usually just clip onto something to stay in place.
Honestly, if you want a good look, IMO, do the +05 grill(like the one in your link minus the inserts, unless you want those too) either modded(cut down) or full conversion with bumpers and headlights. They really change up the front end.
I thought that looked like an '05 grill although it's posted '99-'04...?? What would I need to do to put just the '05 grill in there? The thought has crossed my mind to change the entire front end but for now maybe just the grill and if I do do that do I need to cut anything, would the same grill be able to be used when I do the complete changeover on a later date?

hmmm... If you're ever in my area I might take you up on that. They don't like shipping flammables anymore though... something about being potential bombs.
Of course I'd need to find a new home for this "well loved" cattle pusher. It could use some TLC to look pretty again, but it appears to still be straight. It was not on my "must have" list like the 7.3 and crew cab parts were.

Thanks.
You have to trim the bottom of the grill, other than that they fit. Well since you cut the grill the lower clips are different but zip ties hold them in place well. IF you did a full conversion later, you would need another grill.
Thanks for the link, I've saved it. I am glad that there are pics of the '05 grill with the older bumper and older lights still intact. IMO it does NOT look good, mismatched completely, and has instantly made up my mind to not put in that '05 grill until, if ever, I do the entire front end.
On 1aauto.com they carry the all chrome (or like my original chrome and argent) aftermarket 2001 entire grill, not just the insert or layover, for $140. It does show that they're currently out of them but at least I have an idea of price. I'm going to go with this, me thinks. Looks best. Thanks Al.
