I just went to AutoZone & got mine I am putting them in to day. I ordered them at 10 am & picked them up at 5:30pm the same day, I got both input shaft & pitman arm seals for under $20. I think everyone gets them from the same place.
Bill
Has any one ever tried to just pull the pitman arm off then take out the c-clip then put just the nut & a washer back on. And start the truck up & turn the steering wheel to push every thing out. My son had this happen to him when he did not get the c-clip back in right. He said he just pushed everything back in with the c-clip in right, & it has not leaked since it happened. Does any one know weither or not this could hurt the gear box in any way. I am asking because I am having a hard time getting out the first dust sheild.
Thanks Bill
Never tried it that way, but I don't see anything that could be damaged by trying......just have a drain pan under the steering gear incase the seals do blow out.
Well I tried it & it did work out OK, I had to just rock the steering wheel from right to left & it worked its way out. I had taken it out of the truck so I just put it back in with two bolts, but when I went to put in the other bolt is when I found out some thing was wrong. One of the bolts would not thread all of the way in, I found out after I bought the truck it had been hit pretty hard on the passengers side. It looks like some one went off of the road & ran over some thing big, the rear end has been replaced with a newer 80's rear end and the bed has a football size dent from the bottom up right before the tailgate. So I got one from AutoZone & it bolted right in & so far it is doing just fine no leaks & it works great. Driving it down the road it seems to drive just like a 78 truck should. When I went to put in the new seals in the old gear box the whole was not round. So I am not sure if it was just wear or if it was from being hit, the truck has a few dents & the mud sheild's are both gone front & back on that side but that is it. Well the front bumper is pushed in a little bit on the passengers side also. But the rest of the front end seems just fine. I guess I will find out if there are any more problems now that I am driving it.
