finally joined after spending countless hours on this website. its very helpfull
I have a 2000 X 6.8 v10. i changed my coils and plugs because i had a misfire and with the mileage it has i figured why not......heres my situation.
after being in the truck for maybe ten minutes, my oil pressure light went off (meanwhile the gauge didnt move, it was right in the middle) the engine wouldnt let me go past 30mph so i limped to a gas station. i added two qts of oil and drove home like nothing had happened.
last night the same thing happened. i pulled into the same gas station and checked the oil......it was totally full. i waited 10 minutes and fired up the engine and it was fine. i drove home like nothing had happened.
any ideas? any where to look? sorry for the long post
Sounds like you're going into limp mode due to you temp getting too high. The gauges on your dash are not very accurate. A scagauge 2 is probably the cheapest route. You then can read codes and also watch for accurate gauges at once. Have you checked your antifreeze? Is it low? Is it oily? You may have a bad thermostat or just low on antifreeze. Waiting the 10 min may let it cool down and the you're fine until it gets too hot again.
I realize the gauges arent that accurate. I just had the thermostat and antifreeze replaced
What do the too have in common? Actually i just dropped it off at my mechanic and on the way the same thing happened except i pulled over and turn the truck off then immediately right back on. Problem gone. My mechanic seems to be baffled as well
Was it doing this before you replaced the antifreeze and thermostat? If not I would bet on a faulty thermostat. What is weird is that as soon you turn it off and back on it is fine. (Maybe the thermostat is sticking) Are you losing any fluid at all?
It almost sounds like a fuel problem though. Does it do it more when almost emty or it really doesnt matter? When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? The other posibility is a clogged CAT.
It didnt do it before thermostat was changed. No leaking fluids. It started after i changed the plugs and coils. Maybe coincidental? I need to replace the fuel filter still. What would the oil and temp gauge have to do with each other? Still havent heard back from the "mechanic"
Not sure about the oil light. The theromostat sticking could be making the enginge get hotter and go into limp mode. I would start there since its fairly cheap and it didnt do it before the change. Did you use Motorcraft Plugs and Coils? If not they could be part of the problem too. But they should be thowing a code. The oil light has me puzzeled. How low was it? Is the oil burnt?
No burnt oil. It happened about 5 days after plugs and coils
Thermostat was changed about 2 months ago
The plugs were not motircraft but an oem replacemeent. Not off ebay. Still waitin on the mechanics call
Highly doubt it's the thermostat. If it were "sticking" you would have actual, physical symptoms of overheating. You don't.
It's electrical. You may have a low coolant situation or air pockets that could cause the sender to read incorrectly but that doesn't explain the oil pressure light.
my oil pressure light went off
i added two qts of oil and drove home
last night the same thing happened... checked the oil......it was totally full. i waited 10 minutes and fired up the engine and it was fine.

I agree with Ken (Monsta) that it is purely electrical.
I don't think this has anything to do with your new plugs or thermostat.
It sounds like a faulty oil pressure sending unit (I just don't know if it would go into limp mode because of low oil pressure).
When this first happened and you added 2 qts of oil, how long had it been since you checked it?
However, I am curious if your miss was cured after plugs were changed.
Well the mechanic called and said they couldnt find anything wrong. He said it had a maf sensor and cylinder #6 overheat. Im stumped also. I cant see how the two are related. The oil sensor and the thermostat. I believe i still have a miss on a cylinder. Im gonna get the truck and replace number six and see if that helps. Should i reset the whole unit by removing the battery and waiting awhile? I forgot to mention that when i did the fix i cleaned my maf and forgot to replug it in. It drove like poo!! Finally figured what i had done. Not sure if that has anything to do with it?? Im totally baffled
i will get the truck in the am. i will remove the battery and reset the codes if my mechanic didnt already do it. I did replace all plugs, coils and boots. I will check to make sure its in there good. i found another thread with a guy who had the same exact thing goin on but he never posted what the outcome was. ive read about the radiator cap being bad but do you think that would cause the false overheat/oil pressue light to come on and the overheated cylinder code?????
