Fuel transfer issues

I have a 88 f-150 with dual tanks. The rear tank works fine and when I switch to the front tank the fuel gauge moves but I'm still pulling out of the rear tank. Just today I found out that the transfer pump has been bypassed pulling fuel only from the rear tank. Well when I put everything back the way it should go the truck ran for about 5 mins then shut off. I checked for fuel pressure from both tanks and fuel was making it to the fuel rail. When I put things back the way they were when I started, truck ran fine. So what gives? Do I need to replace the transfer pump or is it something else?

Your truck has a complicated mess of a fuel system with low pressure pumps in each tank, a high pressure pump on the frame, and something called the dual function resovoir which handles the switching between tanks. It sounds like you either have a bad pump or faulty switching resovoir, I suggest you connect it the way it's supposed to be and then check fuel pressure, if it's low(should make 40psi at the fuel rail engine off) make sure all 3 pumps work and if so change the resovoir.
