I have a really anoying squeak that has gotten worse w/ time. I don't think it is engine related because around 20 or 30 mph you can kill the engine and it just keeps on squeaking. The squeak changes w/ truck speed, not engine speed.
I have re-greased the wheel bearings.
U-joints dont usually SQUEAK...its more of a clunking. At least my experience with them.
Here's a few things to check...
1. Push down on each corner of the truck, could be a spring or a bushing in a spring or shock.
2. Rock the truck. If it squeaks, you could need to replace cab bushings or have a squeaky bed bolt.
3. If none of these are it...here's a great idea...buy a crankin' *** stereo and turn it up...no more squeak...just kidding
A worn out, dry u-joint will squeak. I'd describe it as a pulsing squeak noise that is relative to vehicle speed. Each u-joint should have a grease zirk on it, try greasing them. If the noise goes away, then you've found the problem. Then the bad joint needs replaced - even though it's not squeaking any more.
Do you feel a slight vibration? Often (but not always) a worn u-joint will vibrate.
My 71 had an annoying squeak and it progressed to the point where I actually had to do something about it. It turned out to be a loose exhaust pipe at the collector that rotated enough to rub against the crossmember. Of course it couldn't be fixed by just tightening the nuts. They were rusty and crusty. I ended up removing both exhaust manifolds (the other one was loose too), replaced the studs and bolts. I also discovered a big crack on the right exhaust manifold and went to the bone yard for another one. No more squeaks. The person that did the work before used nylock nuts on the exh. manifold studs....
Lots of great ideas. I looked at the u-joints about a week ago and couldn't find any fittings. Are there any that don't have them or am I just an idiot w/ a grease gun? When I put it in gear, it does, clunk going from drive to reverse and the other way too. I will look again at those U joints to see if I can find that fitting.
Chances are, you probably don't have a grease zerk on your u-joints. If you have a clunk in gear changes, then that could be your culprit. By all means, go to your local parts house and buy some new u-joints...that way, they will have a grease zerk.
My 1968 F-100 squeaks like crazy at the steering column. I usually squirt a little penetrating oil and it solves the problem for a few months. This may be the tip of a larger problem, I'm not sure.
If you buy new u-joints as suggested be sure and read up on how to replace them. It's not a bad job but if you go about it the wrong way you will become very frustrated and might break something. Good luck.
