I have an 03 F250 4WD CC 7.3 with 164k miles and whenever I take off from a light, or come to a stop that causes the body to shift foward or back, I can feel a "metal on metal" or "something needs to be greased" feel but I cant find what it is. The drive train is tight. No noise going in and out of drive or reverse from park, just when leaving from a dead stop or coming up to a light or stop sign. It does go away, however, when i have a trailer in town and is non existant while going down the road. I have noticed that the slide shaft boot is missing the front band. Could greasing the splines be the problem or solution?
Do a search on my user name or check the tech section here. I think your experiencing the standard driveline thunk. It’s a simple fix if this is the actual problem. You should probably get a new boot kit which will come with the Oetiker clamps. Only problem is you will need to find a way to crimp the clamps or purchase the Oetiker clamp pliers. You cant use side cutters to crimp them. The boot kit is ~$40, the Ford Teflon grease is $10 (it’s the only grease that works) the pliers are $40 unless you can find cheaper non-chinese knock offs?<O</O
My buddy had a driveline "thunk/weird feeling" while leaving stop signs in his 02 7.3 as well. His limited slip clutch packs were completely worn out and slopping around.
I'd bet you a nice cold beer that its the slip yoke splines sticking as described above. Its a common issue, and the band clamp missing is going to be a big contributing factor due to grease getting out and crud getting in. Limited slip clutch problems are going to manifest when cornering.
I'm gonna grease the splines first thing in the morning and put a new clamp on the boot. It seems like an easy fix and it sounds like it needs to be done for routine maintenance anyhow.
Thanks to all for your help. It was the slip joint. When I pulled it apart yesterday, the splines were bone dry but all the blue teflon type stuff was all still intact. None of it had worn off at all. I'm thinking that's a good thing. So I filled it back full of grease, replaced the front boot clamp, and now I have no more problems.
If you are careful with the right size flat screw driver you can save the clamp.
You will need a pair of end nippers to re-crimp the Oetiker clamps.
By the way you only need to remove the front clamp.
