My ZF5 is kinda tough to get fully into reverse. Maybe I don't have the feel of it yet, or maybe it'll get better when I change to Royal Purple Synchromax, but maybe not. Usually I get it in fine, but some times it apparently isn't quite all the way in and the gears grind.
So, I'm thinking about utilizing the backup light switch on the ZF to put a REVERSE warning light on the dash in the far left position that is currently unused. Hopefully that would let me know when I'm not in so I could try again.
That brings me to several questions:
Does anyone else have problems getting their ZF fully into reverse?
Is there a known problem with reverse on the ZF that would suggest I have trouble looming?
What do you think about the idea of having an indicator on the dash?
The backup light connection on the ZF doesn't look like anything from one of these trucks. Anyone have one of the connectors? Or, is there a source for them like HELP?
To use the far left indicator position I'll have to do it like the 4x4 indicator on the right, meaning a separate bulb/socket combo that twists in. Anyone know of a source for those, like HELP?

Remember that you'll have to have a source of power for that light. The 4x4 socket plugs into both the transfer case, and the fuse panel.

Yep, just like the 4x4. That's why I need a socket just like that one.

If it pops out of gear, then you have bad bearings or a chipped tooth
I haven't noticed it popping out of gear. As for 1st, I dunno - I rarely use it. But, on the few times I have I haven't noticed it being hard. Is there a connection between 1st and reverse synchros?
Anyway, a good reason to go to RP as it is far less expensive than an overhaul.
Make sure the brake fluid is topped off in the clutch master.
I had to change mine in my 89, it had so much dirt in it, the holes in the bottom of it were plugged, going into reverse was sometimes next to impossible

Thanks, but you might have missed that this is mechanical linkage. And, while I'm now rethinking the decision to go that way, I've now rebuilt the entire linkage with the exception of the rubber cover on the clutch pedal so want to continue on this way. And, I know some of the guys wanting to install a ZF5 are still using mechanical linkage so wanted to sort out all the problems I could in that setup. But, were I to do it over again....
