I have went to 5 local ford dealers and the best deal I have came up with is this.
This one dealer will sell me the vehicle at the invoice price. Then I said I want tires to all the dealers. The tires I want is the BFgoodrich all-terrain t/a's. The first dealer I went to said some crap like $850 for the tires and they would sell the truck at invoice, NO WAY when the tires are around $580 installed local. Then the next dealer said they would sell them to me for cost ~ $600. The other 2 dealers suck and wont even sell the vehicle at invoice.
The last dealer I went to said they would sell me the truck at invoice, throw in the tires at $400 installed which is saving ~ $180. Then it is the farthest away dealer in another county which they say there tax rate is a little lower so that saves about $60. And to top it off I get to keep the existing tires on the vehicle which are brand new (around 30 miles on truck) so I can sell them to make up for some of the money I am spending on the Goodrich tires.
Does this sound like a good deal?
The only other thing the dealer charges is documentaion fee of $250. Every site I have read says dont pay more then $50 but I cant seem to get any dealer to BUDGE on this. Do you really have to pay the $250 for doc fees? I think $50 is more then resonable, but what do I know? Any advice on this deal?

It's great to save $180, but where do you plan on having the vehicle serviced? Will you go back to that dealer, that's the furthest away, or will you be relying on a dealer that's closer? If the local dealers give you a hard time about servicing a truck that was bought elsewhere, you may want to think twice. It might be cheaper in the long run to buy from a dealer that's closer.

Ask the dealer to substantiate the reason(s) for the $250 doc fee. Why does it cost them that much? Are there fees that they have to pay to the county or state that cause them to charge you so much? Or is it just in your state they get to charge that amount by law, regardless of their costs. Check your state's DMV laws (website?) before proceeding with this.
Hey thanks for the reply. Actually I just got a MATCH offer from my local dealer. So I would by from them and that takes care of the service issue.
Also that is good advice. I think I will ask the dealer to tell my why the DOC fee is so HIGH. I have a feeling they are just trying to recover profit from a good deal they give out. Also the dealer charges title and registration which pays for the DMV fees.
Hopefully I can get the dealership to drop the doc fees DOWN!
I can appretiate getting a good deal, it makes you feel good, but you are talking about $200 difference here. What is it going to cost you when you need to go back to the dealership when you have a problem. If you beat a dealer down on price and get the best deal out there, what do you expect will happen when there is a problem. Should they bend over backwards for you when there is another customer there who paid a little more for the truck.
I dunno how you feel 1956MarkII, but I notice that the person who gets the best deal is usually the hardest to please.
canadianfordman > I agree with what you say. I guess I feel I am allready getting a good deal, so NO the $200 is not a HUGE difference. I just wondered if that is what most people pay for the dealer to print a few documents that doesnt cost more than about $5. So they give you a GOOD deal knowing they recover more profit from the documentation fee.

AMEN, brother! This has held true since the first dealership went into business. The customer that pays full sticker never asks for a thing; the one that STEALS the vehicle just takes and takes and takes.... and they're NEVER happy, they NEVER send you a referral, and they NEVER thank you for the great deal they got. Some day we'll figure out why that is.............
I guess I'm in the middle. I pay sticker, ask for a free case of oil and oil filters (or something like that), and send the salesman a thank-you card the next business day. Is it dorky to send the salesman a thank-you card? Momma said it was good manners.

Dorky? Not at all! Most of us would appreciate and remember it, especially if you ever needed a favor. In fact, in today's mail, I received a "thank-you greeting card." The customer (who works in a large photographic store) did a photo greeting card of his new Focus, imprinted with "IT'S A FORD! 2752 LBS., 6OZ." next to the photo, and a thank-you note at the bottom. Everybody in the dealership thought it was pretty cool. It got me thinking: what a great way to let a customer know that their ordered vehicle has arrived. Take a digital photo of the truck (while still on the carrier, maybe?) and e-mail it to them. Pretty cool way to find out your vehicle is in, don't you think?
1956MarkII I love the picture idea I think I am going to start doing that. I love the rush I get when a customer is so excited to take delivery of there new vehicle. Its an awesome feeling.
As far as silly pictures things with the dealers go, the dealership I've bought my past two cars at have, at delevery, taken a picture of me with the car which they then make into a calendar and send to me in a couple days. It's simple and I don't know if every dealership does it, but I like it alot.
