I'm planning to buy some Summit shorty headers based on some searching I did here. I noticed that some have mentioned the gaskets that come with them aren't the best quality.
I'm looking for recommendations on better gaskets, please!
Best gasket you can get would be copper ones, shouldnt matter what brand. But i do believe they are a one time only seal, if they leak cuz bolts loosened up you need to replace them.
I think I'm going to give the Percy's gaskets a try, with Mr. Gasket ultra seal steel core as a backup plan.
From what I've read, with the Percy's gaskets I may have to re-torque a couple of times as they compress, but I've always done that with header bolts anyway.
Good news is, my local Autozone can have either gasket overnight, and may even stock the Percy's gasket.
Excellent! Always good to have input from someone who's used the product. The more I read about them, the more I'm thinking they're the best ones to get. Thanks!
Parts are ordered and will be on their way tomorrow. Summit shorty headers, Percy's gaskets, and an EGR tube, because I've got a feeling mine is going to come off in 27 pieces. lol. If I have time I'll document the install with pics.
You will likely find that those Summit shorties are actually Pacesetters. That is what I got. I even used the supplied gaskets. Been a month and no issues. The bolts supplied are a bit soft, as I stripped one over and replaced it with one I had in my bolt bin(better quality).
I just pinched my air tube off(don't have testing in my area), and bypassed air pump.
I bought the cheap set, had a local place coat them. They warranty their stuff, so it was a better bargin.
That's what I had read in my search, about them being Pacesetter headers. Either way, it's a great bargain, and just about the same price as new manifolds. Even if it doesn't add power, it'll look cool!
I'm not planning on having them coated, unless I can find a reasonable price in my area.
I'm also planning on deleting my air pump and tube as well. Right now, I've got an exhaust leak where the air tube enters the pipe. My plan is to remove the tube and weld a patch over the hole in the exhaust pipe for now.
When you bypassed your air pump, did you remove it and use a shorter belt? If your truck is a 5.8, I could use a recommendation for belt length if you have it handy.
Yup, I was needing a new exhaust and knew the manifold were going to be a PITA to get bolted back to, so I bought headers. With having a local place to coat them and a nice warranty I figured it was better. I had them do my new headers on my race car and they turned out super nice.
I have a 302, so it's a different belt. There is a post just recently about this, so do a quick search and you should find the belt number you need. Mine was 88" long, and after removing the pulley it cleared without removing the pump or having to buy a relocation pulley.
I was able to remove the drop pipe(from back of heads at the valve) and pinch the tube over and reinstall it. I put a dual kit on, so I don't need anything hooked to pipe.
Freightrain I am looking to delete my smog pump when I go with duals on my truck, and any reason you didn't just plug the rail holes in the back of the heads with just bolts? Leaving the air pump rails off entirely.
I thought about it. I didn't feel like dealing with all it, so I just slipped the down tube off, crimped it over and slipped it back on. It's all rubber hose and hose clamps on that side of it. The factory cross over tube on the heads is in nice shape, so not worried it's going to rot off too soon. Maybe next spring I'll go farther with it.
Got the part in today. They are indeed Pacesetter headers, and come complete with a sticker that says the paint on them is not a high temp coating. Cheap price, so I can't and won't complain.
Still up in the air on whether or not I want to have them coated, or if I'll just spray them with VHT high temp.
Local coating guy says $150 to coat them, which doesn't seem unreasonable, but I'll most likely only have this truck for another couple of years.
I haven't had anything coated in years. Freightrain, does $150 sound decent?
