My 5.4L is losing oil somehow. By every 3000 miles I will usually have to have added around 1.5-2 quarts of oil to keep it full. I have looked for spilled oil and never see any. I also have looked for smoke and have never seen any of that either. Any ideas?
I have 181000 miles on it and have been very religious about changing the oil every 3000 miles. I am thinking about adding the lucas oil treatment stuff to it cause it really helped out one of our older tractors
well I already added it to my oil before I read your post so i decided to do a little testing myself. First i checked my oil and it was at the full marker, so i started my truck and checked it again and it was below the fill line and was not foamy or anything. It looked like good clean oil. Then I held my truck at 3000 rpms for 3 minutes and checked it again(with the motor still at 3000 rpm). The oil level was still the same and there were no bubbles in the oil nor was it foamy or anything.
The only thing that I have noticed since adding the oil additive was the slight knocking that my motor made has gone away. It is too soon to see if my oil consumption has been reduced but I should be able to notice soon.
I do know that the lucas in one of our old gas massey harris and diesel deere stopped them from smoking.
Sounds about normal to me, mine has been eating around that much oil for well over 100K miles. No smoke and only a very small leak at the oil cooler lines. I would simply add a qt. at around 1500 miles then change the oil around 3K-4K when it was a qt low again.
if its common for his 180k mile motor to use 1.5-2 quarts, ive put 2 full quarts in and im about 1/4" down from MAX with 4600 miles and 40k on the truck
my 01 has 135K and it uses about a quart every 3000 mikes with no leaks, need to add some lucas. Just changed oil in my other beast 99 f250 v10 6.8 and added some lucas.
